Hi all,

ridiculously busy with work atm, so no time to go in for a dealer service any time soon.

So, anyone know if this is anything to be concerned about?
I think it first came on after I hit a large pothole a while ago, although that may jutst have been a coincidence...
Intermittently flashes up in the dash driver message centre display "Active suspension service required " or similar.
Car drives without fault and no differently to before it started flashing up - is there anywhere to look for a possible loose wire or other quick simple fix, or is this a known issue with a strut or something? Or is it a case of having to make time to book it into Volvo main dealer to have them connect it to their diagnostic machine?

Wow...inundated with replies biggrin

Have a little time spare between jobs so am intending to try and get this sorted this week.....

its all very very odd, there is an intermittent squeak from the OSR suspension, it can go for a week without making a sound then a sound not unlike a thousand trapped budgies just starts and doesnt stop.

I assume mk3 is 2008 onwards?

If it's anything like the active suspension on the P2 cars, then the struts can be rather expensive indeed direct from Volvo.

Have any of the MOTs mentioned a misting of oil on the dampers or anything like that previously? May give a hint that things have been wearing out.

You can buy replacement dampers direct from Monroe now which saves a lot of money, RockAuto.com are a decent reseller that ship to the UK. Out of morbid curiosity I priced up a full set of them for my P2 V70 and it came to ~£1,000.

Easiest way is to find the part numbers on the Monroe website, and then put the part number in on RockAuto, as their website is an arse to navigate and far easier if you just have the part numbers already thumbup

just to update ( as I am very annoyed)

As my diagnostic mahcine couldnt connect to the Volvo ECU I took the car to a well known independant Volvo specialist to have them link it up to their diagnostic machine and put the car up on the lift to give the rear suspension a check over just after the original posts above.
They put it up on a four poster for about 5 mins and had a quick look and promptly charged me £80 for the diagnostic print out.
The print out showed that there was no information coming back from the NSR active suspension strut.
With it showing no information at all on the diagnostics yet being intermittent when using the car I asked the guy if he had looked at the connector plug and was it all ok and could it not just be a broken wire as I would think it unlikely to be a complete failure of the unit.
He just said no, he checked it all and it definately needs a new 4c strut..and they are expensive - I think something around £600 was mentioned plus labour... but cant remember exactly, may have been more.
The afore mentioned independant garage actually called me several times in the following weeks to try and get me to book the car in to have the strut replaced, I declined as it didnt really bother me in daily use and intended to just get it sorted when I had more time.

Anyway - fast forward to this morning and due to total boredom I pulled the trolley jack out and jacked the car up and removed the NSR wheel. Within 10 seconds I spotted a broken wire right next to the active suspension plug. A quarter of an hour later the car drives without fault or fault message!!
Happy I saved myself a small fortune but also a bit pissed off that I could have been so severely ripped off due to a lazy arse not bothering to even look properly.

Agree, that really pisses me off when all they care about is making money!

Had the same problem when i had a VW, £80 on diagnostics, to be told it was broken....'we can fix it for £600' told them to F off a polish guy who fixed the problem for £50!

What part of the country are you? We all need to guess who it is to avoid that 'specialist' biggrin.

I am in Durham, specialist is further north.
