As well as the BMW 3-Series we've looked at a very nice 2006 S6 2.0T Automatic with 64k on the clock.

I've asked on the Volvo owners club forums but I think it's worth asking here in case anyone has any insights - this is my post from the owners club:

After a 20 minute test drive I left the car idling, opened the bonnet and noticed that every 5 seconds or so there was some sort of mechanical click / relay activation type sound, the engine speed would change very slightly, and what appeared to be smoke/steam or fumes were coming from the front of the engine from somewhere under the middle two manifold pipes.

The "smoke" did not smell oily , it didnt really smell at all, and it didn't linger in the air. It's a cold day and it seemed to evaporate more like steam.

After a few seconds of smoking there was the same mechanical click sounds, the engine revs changed again slightly and the smoke stopped. This process repeated for the 10 minutes or so we left it idling, but nothing else seemed to happen.

I'm a bit stumped as to what could smoke or steam at the front of the engine, but would also cycle on and off every 5 or 10 seconds?

The dealer is booking the car into an autocentre to check & fix anything up with the car before MOTing it, and I've not yet put down a deposit or anything until I have some idea what this issue could be.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also, 1 other question - the cooling fan was running constantly, but I'm not sure if thats normal or not or whether it should cycle on and off or just change speed? It's an automatic, and we had the car up to temperature, had a good drive, left it idling for 10 minutes or so with no overheating or temp gauge movement.

If anyone can help me with any info it would be much appreciated.

Air conditioning cycling on and off? You can hear (and feel) it turn on on my 07 D5...

As for the steam, dunno.

Turned out to be a split breather pipe, so hopefully no worries there, it's passed an MOT with only a broken ABS ring which is now fixed, and we're having the car inspected at our trusted local garage tomorrow to make sure there is nothing else wrong (including a coolant dip test), so fingers crossed tomorrow evening we can complete the purchase.
