I'd like to upgrade my head unit so that I can have bluetooth for handsfree telephone but also obviously the other features come in handy.

It would be nice to be able to retain the steering wheel controls but I have also read that changing the head unit can cause issues with the cars computers.

Anyone done it and anyone got any advice?

Thanks.

Thanks for that, looks a good option to add bluetooth connectivity and handsfree etc. That is definitely a top option so far.

I was interested in something like this though to lift the interior and add a lot more media options including nav/apps/dvd etc:

I am not aware of an aftermarket unit that can use the steering controls, also remember that if you have an SE spec with dolby pro logic or an S with upgraded stereo then you'll have the external amplifier to worry about and will lose the centre speaker in the dash.

Its an S60R with 4cd in dash changer and dolby. I haven't found an amplifier anywhere unless its in the dash.

Amp is under the seat I think
Indeed. Drivers seat. I had to get to it when I put a cable in for the external sub and amp in the boot.

There is a small box under each front seat but I assume this is to do with the heated seats as both sides have one. Under tge drivers seat I have additional hardware which looks to be just for the electric seat motors. I'm not seeing anything that is obviously an AMP.

Many of the Volvo guys replace their headunits with Bluepower units, which seem quite good.

Well the head unit on my V70 shed was busted so I went for an eBay facia plate and a cheapo DAB radio. Yes I lost the steering wheel controls but i don't find it an issue.

YMMV

You will definitely have an amp as the 4xCD unit only has an internal amplifier for the centre speaker.

It is under the driver's seat - you can see it from the rear passenger footwell if you push the driver's seat right forward. To get to it properly you need to remove the seat.
