S60 D5... owners
Discussion
Don't know about bushes, I've yet to replace any, although two were done at the front as part of the service before I bought it (allegedly). Standard aftermarket rear dampers are about £50 each. Replacement looks simple enough, I'm going to do mine soon.
I took mind to a place that did 'supertrack' or something. Generally, if it's not out, they don't charge. I believe tracking on the rear wheels is adjustable (so they told me, I might just be gullible...), hence why a 4 wheel machine is better.

Aha, I see.
Really tempted given the machine for the money but just wonder if I hit some kind of big snag, or a turbo goes, or whatever, I'll be faced with a huge bill. I know same is true of every car but on top of increased insurance/petrol/tax over a 'normal' car...
Then again I could buy one and it'll be perfect!

They're generally renowned for being pretty reliable, so much so that the RAC man commented that he rarely gets called out to them, doing nothing to reassure me it was a simple thing to fix (although it turned out to be simple in the end).
I think the previous owner of mine neglected it a bit, so I've been clobbered with some bills, although nothing huge, it just seems to have all happened at once. I tend also to be fairly fussy, in terms of keeping it in reasonable fettle, so spend quite a bit on preventive maintenance, where others might leave things until they fail or wear out completely.
It's an 02 plate, with 159k on the clock, but is running just fine. In May I did 3,700 miles, so it's not getting a quiet retirement.
In terms of turbos, injectors etc, you could get that with any car, I think it's just bad luck if it happens.

I have just bought my 2004 163bhp S60 D5 geartronic with only 44,500 miles on the clock. This car has pretty much every extra i can imagine and i am so impressed with the way its put together. Built to last thats for sure. I can't vouch for fuel economy as yet but seem to be getting around 50mpg so far. This is my first Volvo having traded in an Audi A4. Well impressed!

aye, Volvo are a cut above Audi in every respect welcome to the fold
Doh! I never did my first year of ownership report...a couple of weeks late but hey ho
I have done 9k in her this year, she has been faultless apart from clutch slave cylinder going pop, 6.5hr job to fix..while in there they fitted New Clutch kit and Dual Mass Flywheel too the flywheel had loads of play in it (Compared to the brand new Volvo one) and although there were no signs of this when driving it was prudent to fit a new one.
Local trusted Independent did the work all Genuine Volvo parts used.
great car

Great news!
Mine is on 179k miles now, should hit 180k later this month and is still going strong. Brilliant car.
Average economy seems to have settled around 46-47mpg. I know if I could be more gentle with it I could get around 50, but it's quite hard to resist hoofing it around a lot of the time. Somewhat different to the trip computer's 'estimate' of 60mpg.

I got round too working mine out properly too, the display (on mine) reads 4-5mpg high over the "real" average for a full tank.Mine is on 179k miles now, should hit 180k later this month and is still going strong. Brilliant car.

I generally get between 600 and 900 miles per tank (depending on the Hoofing effect)
I best I've had is 1000miles from a tank

There were very few areas where the Audi was better, the interior felt a bit more solid and the steering and handling was a bit more responsive (but still rubbish compared to the MG ZT I had before that) but the S60 equals or betters the A4 in pretty much every other area. Especially comfort!

I'm looking at a D5 to become my new commuter car.
I would very much like an auto but need to research the geartronic box further. Do Volvo offer a standard auto as I have been lead to believe that the geartronic option is to be avoided, is this correct? Why? Reliability issues? Way it delivers a gear? Both?
Only difference is the selector and software to allow the "manual" changes. Both exactly the same gearbox and drive the same when in "D".I would very much like an auto but need to research the geartronic box further. Lucky bugger, I just managed to squeeze 740 miles in mine, which was a personal best, but lots of 60 mph on the motorway included in that.I generally get between 600 and 900 miles per tank (depending on the Hoofing effect)

I've heard lots of people saying using the cruise is much worse for economy, but not sure why that would be?

I am aware it is not as frugal as the manual but this is not an issue.
I think you're supposed to change the gearbox oil every so often, but not sure about that....I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon.....
