How much should I expect to pay for the following to be replaced:
-new cambelt (+tensioners)
-timing belt
Timing belt and cambelt is the same thing.

About £200-£250 at a reasonable independent.

It's worth a look, thanks. Just need the 5 point security key to get it out with (I have 6 point torx style ones). I'll see if I can find one.
Just use mole grips or a pipe wrench, they're not too tight. I have searched without success to find the correct security bit.

This outfit are usually recommended for genuine Bosch parts at a good price:

I've found a set of bits on Amazon for 7 quid. There's also a nice Facom screwdriver bit (the security torx ends) for about £70, but that's a little overkill for this job.

Hopefully it'll all turn up on Monday.

Ah, not far away at all then.

Could you drop me a pm with the details if/when you come to sell it please?

Thanks

Will do. It's for sale now actually, or will be once I've got this engine issue sorted. Hopefully will be able to sort it this week.

Trailered the car back to the mechanic today, it's looking like 2 or more injectors have failed. They'll be getting tested tomorrow, so I'm expecting to have to replace some or all of them.

At this rate it'll owe me more than it's worth, I'm almost tempted to keep it as a tow car/workhorse, although I want an old Landy for those duties really.

Oh well, once the engine's sorted, it'll be in for an MOT, and then hopefully back on sale.

Cars! They're like Women, always something needing spending on them!

Before you remove the injectors, ask on T5.

IIRC there is a pipe that volvo recommends that is replaced when injectors are taken out. This doesn't in all cases have to happen.

I'll give them a quick shout, but the mechanic's doing it all, I don't have the time at the moment to deal with it, so I'll go with whatever he recommends.

No, it was done perfectly. Unfortunately, the belt has picked up a piece of debris from the cam belt cover (a tab which has broken off, possibly during the job) which seems to have caused it to jump. He's phoned me up, very apologetic, and has basically offered to buy the car off me.

I'm going to think about it over the weekend, it might amuse me to strip the engine myself, I can't bugger it up any more than it already is, and ultimately I guess I can break it.

Oddly enough, someone contacted me when it was for sale, wanting it for the body, as he'd got a good engine (and presumably a damaged body). I've just emailed him to see if he still wants it. It saves everyone a headache if I can just move it on as is.

You're all going to say I'm soft, and should let the mechanic take the hit. He's a genuine, and very nice chap (and is quite upset about it all), so if I can sort it painlessly I will. It was an old car anyway, it's not worth me or anyone else getting upset over.

st happens, as they say.

Thanks.

There's no point being a tt about it, life is too short to go getting worked up. It's only a car, it's not life or death. The guy is beating himself up about it anyway, if he was being a nob it'd be a bit different. Mistakes happen, I'm pretty sure I've made a few in my time.

Do you want to let me know what you need? Send me a pm if you want. I suspect breaking it will realise more cash than selling it as a whole, although I haven't made a decision yet.

I'm thinking the fold down dog guard would be right up your street Alex!

I've just done a rough tally up of the parts values based on what's on eBay at the moment. I reckon I could probably recover a reasonable amount of money if I break it. It just means I end up keeping the car for longer than planned while I sell the bits. This is assuming the bits sell, of course.
