Lots of good info in this thread! Bit of a long shot but does anybody know of a good manual EU III D5 SE for sale? Finding a tidy one is proving trickier than I'd hoped for. Budget is up to about £4k. I'm not too worried about mileage if the history is good as this thread seems to suggest that they wear their miles well. I'm really looking for a car that falls within the Bristol - London - Birmingham triangle.

Am I correct in understanding that the significant electrical and chassis upgrades came about in late 2003, with a cosmetic refresh in 2005? Ideally I'd like the facelift, but if I am right that the mechanical updates came about a bit earlier then I'd be happy with a car that just has these. Cheers for any help folks.

A long way outside your area, but looks like a good one at a good price:

Thanks folks, I've replied to the message and tried phoning. It's only an hours flight away...(6 hour drive back mind!)

So it just came up as Cat D on a check, loss date just before the current owner purchased the car. Owner claims not to have known and I think I believe him. Loss date was Jan 2011. Opinions? What do you think it is worth with this in mind?

That's the issue. I really want to be able to take a look myself, and then if it looks good have it inspected properly at a volvo dealer or the like to check the chassis alignement etc. Problem is, it is at the other end of the country, and I don't want to shell out for an inspection without taking a look myself first. The fact that the previous seller, whom it turns out performed the repair, did not inform the current owner at the time of sale doesn't sound great to be honest. Damn shame, I was ready to jump on a plane for that!

Is it the S60 you're after? If not this just came up in a search on 'trader;

- which looks lovely, if a little strong on price (but could be justified if it is straight and warranted).

I'm after an S60 really, but thanks for the suggestion. Is anybody able to answer my earlier question, i.e. were there chassis and electrical updates brought in before the 2005 facelift? And was the 2005 facelift purely cosmetic? I can't seem to find a decent year-by-year history of the car on the net unfortunately, but I've read bits and pieces about there being some mechanical changes before the facelift.

Reason I ask is that there is an 04 plate pre-facelift nearby that looks promising and I'm just wondering what I would be missing compared to a facelift version.

Wow - just come across this thread after enquiring about this car a few days back. I didn't know it was a Cat D.

However, initially the seller told me that it had been in a bit of an accident where the previous owner slid off the road in icy conditions and damaged the rear wheel arch; that is all. In the mean time while waiting for that response, I did a bit of research and found this post:

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=117...

I then pointed this out to him and he confirmed he came off the road and repaired it himself...

Read it to it what you will, but I've crossed it off my list...

Good work.

Apologies for posting the link in the first place, I obviously had taken the ad at face value and had no idea.

Wow, well how about that. He straight up lied to me as well, told me that the former owner was the one who came off the road. I got the write off date as 21/01/2011, and he assured me that the date of his ownership on the V5 was after this so I believed him on that. Good thing I didn't end up going all the way to Scotland to view it. In the end I found another one, one owner from new, 70k miles, great condition for a little over three and half grand. HPI clear and the mileage checks with the service history! Very pleased with it smile

Only negative with the car is a little alloy scuffing and a small parking dent in the N/S/F wing. I'll get these sorted, get the car polished up, and then I'll post a pic or two...

Final update for my V70: It's back on my drive awaiting breaking.

I'll stick threads up on the relevant forums (and possibly an ad on here/ebay) for all the bits.

Bad luck chap - bit of a sad end for an old faithful car. I hope you get a good return on the breaking - I could well be interested in some bits and pieces once you get the ads up.
It is, I've only scrapped a car once before, and it seems a bit like taking a dog to the vet for the last time (even though it's only metal and plastic).

If you think of anything you want, give me a shout, it's going to be a slow process I think as I'm quite busy in the run up to next year. We shall see.

Sorry to hear this frown
Was gutted to scrap my old 850 20valve when it's time came!

The Beater Golf may well go the same way once I have my new car (passing my S60 on to MissB).
It'll be a shame to scrap it as it is fundamentally a good car but it is worth feck all as rust has got hold and the sunroof now leaks like a sieve.

Sorry to hear that. A rebuild isn't particularly cheap either, from what I'm told.

I'm going to be stripping my engine soon (when I get the sofa/fridge/filing cabinet/wardrobes out of my garage), to see how bad the damage is. I doubt I'll re-build it though, although to be fair, a running D5 engine is worth over £1,000, so it might be worth it. I'm inclined just to sell the working parts though assuming there are any left.
