PS, I know it's the V70 (sorry), but any thoughts on this (assuming it has the E3 engine)?

My intercooler has finally given up the ghost, it keeps going into limp under load. A smoke test has been carried out which has confirmed it is leaking. To my knowledge it is the original, so hasn't done too bad as the car is now on 183k, and i've had it since 92k.
I have been quoted about £350 to have it replaced, has anyone attempted this themselves as a DIY fix? I see you can get replacements for between £100-£150, any brands in particular to go for/avoid?

I did mine, years ago mind. It's not so difficult if you don't remove the air con and cooling radiator, although it's a bit of a squeeze getting the new intercooler in.
I bought the genuine part intercooler, although they're quite expensive from what I remember.
3 hours is about right.

Thanks for the feedback, 6 hours is probably more accurate for me if I attempt this myself! Has anyone tried to take it out from the top or just remove from underneath as recommended?
There are 2 versions, mine will be the older version without the sensor as its an '01 which costs an extra £20! Probably less produced as they only put them on the 01-02 cars.

I'm sure mine came out from above, I removed the slam panel, loosened everything off so the other rads could be moved as much out of the way as possible, then it just slides out. My 3 hours was the first time I'd ever attempted it, and included two tea breaks.
The 2.4D will do 50 mpg on a run, the 2.0 petrol perhaps 30 ish. No contest.
The old S60 (2000-2009) is a good old bus, strongly engineered as old Volvos were. Most jobs are very easy - cam belts, brakes etc and suspension stuff is all very straightforward.
The only problems are:
The turning circle would put the Bismarck to shame. It's ridiculous - pulling out of a side turning on a narrow street requires caution.
The manual gear change on later cars with the odd 'silver ball' plastic 'gaiter' is poor.
Instrument lighting is a joke.
Rear legroom? Forget it. With a six footer up front, you can just about squeeze in.
But:
It's fast and good on fuel.
Very good chassis. Sports have a dreadful ride so buy an SE.
Insanely comfy front seats.
An excellent motorway mile muncher.
At nearly half the price of an E90 or E60 diesel they're definitely worth a look.

Eh? It's very good as far as I can see?
Ever driven a BMW? The lighting in the Volvo cluster is appalling, one of a few minor but irritating things that let it down. The awful space ball gearshift is another - not being able to select reverse gear in a hurry is a major downside.Bonefish Blues said:
I too don't have an issue with mine. Is yours broken (seriously) such that it's stuck on the lowest light intensity setting?
No, it's just rubbish. Most cars have their instruments back lit. The S60 has non reflective dials with feeble lights shone on them - trying to read them in half light is horrible no matter how brightly lit they are. Mine is a late 2007 with the stainless steel style instrument rings.iSore said:

For some reason they have different lighting to every other version. The normal S60/V70/S80 lighting from that generation is backlit and fine. They did fit the weird instruments to the very last of the line V70/S60 - only on the Sport model of the V70 I think.confused_buyer said:

Aaah, this is a Sport S60. Probably why then! I like the car though, it's really very good in most respects.kapiteinlangzaam said:
140 is still less than 1/2 of what a dealer will charge I think.
If an indy uses the Nissens part, id just pay them the 350 and be done with it.
GSF were doing a very generous 40% off at the weekend, so I managed to snipe a brand new Nissens intercooler for just £102! Result! If an indy uses the Nissens part, id just pay them the 350 and be done with it.
My trusted indie will fit it for the price of 3 hours labour.
Proper old bus. Mine's on 160'000. Will be for sale in a couple of months, a 57 plate early 2008 reg 2.4D. I'd imagine it's worth somewhere in the £3500 region. I've improved the dreaded space ball gearshift by spraying furniture polish into the ball itself, seems to have improved it. I'm having the brake fluid done next week and a split seat bolster fixed. I shall miss the old thing.
