As above,

The old man's T5 ECU is playing up, Volvo want 850 plus VAT and fitting to get it fixed, does anyone know if you can buy them second hand and install them?

Thanks!

Depending on what model year he may be able to run with another ECU bought second hand.

The later cars that have a fly by wire throttle have the ME7 ECUs that lock to just the one car.

The earlier cars with mechanical throttle which have Motronic 4.4 ECUs will often run with a used one from another car.

Regards, Don.

Do you happen to know where the ECU is for a 98/99 Volvo so it can be taken out?

Teke it out, strip out the PCB and clean the soldering with acetone so all the solder is shiny. Then take it to a TV repairman and get him to use an air soldering iron to reflow all the solder connections.

That will cost you £30 and probably fix it.

If the car is an S60 or 2000 on V70 it uses canbus electronics and the ECU's are coded to the car. Volvo will not recode any electronic parts between cars.

Good luck.

Black box on the lefthand side of the engine bay with a plastic hose coming from the top left corner of the radiator, it has metal brace across the top. Remove the Metal brace - it may well be rivetted on - drill out the rivett (it can be replaced with a bolt) Remove the plastic hose from the box - It just pulls of. Pop the top of the box off (simple clips either side). If you have an auto there will be 2 ECU's in there, if its a manual there will be 1. The engine ECU is on the right hand side. It has a large metal brace, lift this up and gently slide the ECU up and remove, simply replace with a new one doing the reverse. Done.

Tips
Make sure the ignition is off.
DO NOT switch the ignition on whilst the ECU is out of the car.
Its wise to wait around 10 minutes after switching off the ignition before removing the ECU although I have never bothered with mine.
Make sure the ECU part numbers stamped on them match before fitting the new one - e.g. it is the right ECU for the car

I switch my ECU regularly from standard to a RICA and now I have a quick release bolt on the ECU box I can swap them in less than a minute - It really is a piece of piss to do.
