I know, I shouldn't mention the 'C' word in polite company but this year we'll be pulling our 1835kg caravan over some rather hilly terrain and wondered if it would be worth investing in a performance upgrade?

The car has the D5 163 engine with FSH and 70k on the clock, it has had the known 'weak' spot of the middle diff renewed 5k/9 months ago.

The car currently pulls 'fine' with the 'van on the back, perhaps labouring a little when getting up to initial motorway speeds from a standing start but what we've also noticed is that out in the countryside when the going gets hilly/bendy and your continually adjusting between 25 and 55mph and maintaining speed with the flow of traffic (I'm not into generating 30 car tailbacks!) we DO notice that a few more torques would be nice...

I think life would be a little more comfortable for us and others if the car was breathed on a little before this summer's trips through Wales and the Lakes.

So, is it worth investing in the upgrade?

Is my engine too long in the tooth to chance chipping it?

Which is the best supported RICA/BSR/Other and what's the best price at the minute for them?

Can anybody recommend a supplier in the Wiltshire/Hampshire area with whom I can discuss this further?

You can read up on various options open to you at www.t5d5.org where most UK owners of modified late model Volvos hang out.
