Damn it all, I've spent a misty-eyed hour browsing through the Lego back catalogue 1977-1985 on Brickshelf. Time to get back to work…

to the OP - thanks a bunch, I had been trying to give up Lego technic (been clean for nearly 2 years!) but now have just ordered the UNIMOG!

In that case then you will hate what has arrived for me...

Amazon looks cheapest from a quick froogle search @132, quidco gives 7% cashback for purchases from lego though, think its 140 ish there.

Unimog is tempting...

Few on EBay that have been built once for dispaly and packed away again. Only about £90 - I think I'll go for a used one. Didn't realise it builds into an excavator too.

ETA £80 - £90 for a used one in Completed Listings, not current bids.

That Unimog is £155 - cant afford it when im getting the crane truck 8258 next pay day. 8043 is on my wants list too.

We love Lego in our house, we buy lots of kits mostly for the kids but ive got plenty of Technic and Mindstorms.

Apparently there were some significant issues with the 8043 excavator (motors being marginal on power and durability), which may have been corrected on later sets.

Buyer beware - especially if considering buying used items off EBay!

It was the linear actuators that weren't up to the job, Lego will supply you with upgraded ones if you ask for them, I think the early ones were withdrawn from sale and updated, I got some new bits sent to me.

Thanks for that. I e-mailed Lego today to ask what cost an exchange would be if I bought a second hand set that had the old parts. Presumably the updates would only be available to original purchasers?

How do you tell the difference between the old and new designs??

Cheers.

I'm not sure, I checked mine against the older ones and they looked the same, there was a couple of different steps in the build too, I'll see if i can find a picture of the changes, if they are in the instruction book it will be the modified version

If your instructions have these steps in, you have the updated version, might be separate pages as the service pack had or included in the books, if you don't have them get in touch with lego and ask for the 8043 Service Pack, think its free (mine was)

So the linear actuators are in the service pack and are direct replacements, and the other stuff is covered by the additional instruction steps?

Ta.

Yeah, the linear actuators are just direct swap outs, the extra bits in the service pack were these:

That's good, so whatever set I end up with it's not the end of the world to get a service pack.

Thanks again for the info.

Well my weekly bonus has just gone on..... The excavator set! Bought direct from lego and I had £10 off from my VIP points so came in quite cheaply. Got a free spaceman mini-figure too.

Now I just have to tell the wife, and find some time to build them!

well the UniMog build is going well although I have to say it is not my favourite build (that would still have to be 8421 or 8547), as someone mentioned earlier - there are a lot of custom parts on this model!
