The group buy's bus has started, and that's as far as it will get, as it's holiday time soon and I didn't but enough chocolate for the swmbo to bring it with me...

Thought I'd chip in as I completed my first ever technic Lego kit recently. Wanting to make things easy for myself (!), I went straight in with the 42009 crane and it was a fantastic build. Really enjoyed it, fairly technical, but most importantly it took me a number of weeks to build only doing it in small burst during evenings (which is exactly what I wanted).

I only bought it as I wanted to build it, not quite sure what to do with it now so I might sell it. Anyway, great fun, everything worked first time, lots of power functions. Pictures don't do the size of this beats justice.

Tom and I are still working on the SAR helicopter.

He asked me for help on the collective pitch head rotor, not surprising really even I found it hard to comprehend those instructions at first!

The switching mode gearbox is next, looks even more daunting! wink

Well I have got the Mercedes built and got to say it is impressive and is a good build.
Did you find any bits missing? I have just finished the number 1 bags, engine, g/box, steering and suspension, found 2 3 hole black bricks missing, used on page 105 picture 3 and page 107 picture 3 does that make sense?
I took them out of another bag but worried I maybe short at another part of the build

The SAR Helicopter was one of my favourite builds, although I got the pitch head rotor wrong first time around and had to dismantle quite bit to fix it. Enjoy the rest of the build smile

Thanks For The feedback!

Yep,it's finished now, here's some low quality iPad shots!

I also had to disassemble the control for the variable pitch wrong, some how the long black actuator went to the back by the loading ramp, when it should have gone to the front, where the levers are by the pilot and co pilot seats.

Still don't know how I got that so wrong!

question for anyone who sells or has sold larger sets on ebay etc; who do you use for shipping? I may be looking to move a couple of things on at some point and usually use Royal Mail Special Delivery but suspect that will cost £££s with the size and weight of these things. Cheers

For all bigger stuff on ebay I always use Hermes 2 day tracked service through www.parcel2go.com. It's quick and easy and you have options to insure it fully for the correct value, add a signature at the destination and get a confirmation text to your phone when it's arrived. For most stuff it works out around a tenner. You have to drop it off at a ParcelShop yourself but there's loads of them around the country in petrol stations and supermarkets so it's not usually an issue.

Started looking at these today and suddenly I'm like a kid in a toy shop!

I want to spend about £100, but torn between numerous models, namely:

crane 42009
volvo loader 42030
unimog
an the new merc, which looks amazing but a bit out of budget for what is supposed to be a cheap 'keep me busy and out of the pub in the evenings' hobby

The crane was winning, but it doesn't seem to be 'driveable' which I find quite appealing.

The volvo seems to come with loads of motors, etc. Would these be easily transferable over to the crane if I bought that second to make that drivable too?

Thanks in advance smile and if anyone wants to sell me any of the above drop me a PM.

Just cracked and bought the new Merc, amazon warehouse deal for £136!

There are more left if you're quick:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B00SDTS2C...

Graded very good, if its not up to standard just send it back or ask amazon for anything missing, their customer service is usually great smile

Just finished 42030, the Volvo Wheel Loader. What an awesome build and model. Only change to a complete "follow the instructions" build was a wiring swap to connect the movement (forward/back, steering) motors to the same IR receiver, to allow use of the speed control remote (8879) to give control of speed and amount of steering (rather than the crude full-forward/off/full-reverse and full-left/straight/full-right which the basic remote gives).

Just got myself the 24 Hour race car... be it from the Porsche Museum biggrin

Will be building it over the next few days in my evenings.. I already have the Kenwood breakdown truck after having sold 3 large boxes (over 10 year's worth of collecting between me and my brother frown) some years ago to another collector.

I just finished the Volvo Loader after getting it in the Tesco Clubcard boost deal. You are right, it's loaded with motors - 4, plus 2 IR units and controllers.

I have the crane too. It is brilliant and looks really good built.

As you have said (and I am thinking about doing it now I have lots of motors from 42030) there are mods out there to allow you to switch out the crane's gearboxes for a set of motors and make it fully driveable with remote control lift extend etc. I think it takes between six and eight motors total(1 for drive, 1 for steer, 1 for arm lift, 1 for arm extend, 1 for hook lift, 1 or 2 to extend and lower the stabilising stands and I guess an optional further one for lift platform rotation). Plus 3-4 IR units. I guess you could pick which funtion you could live without remote control if you just want to use the diggers.

I would check some of the online instructions for the upgrade to cross compare the motors and see if they would be an easy swap.

For yours (and everyone) knowledge the crane 42009 is £112 on Tesco direct with free shipping to your local store. With Tesco double up vouchers, also through Tesco direct, I've just ordered one at around £80!

Ive been told by the OH that the crane will be my bday present and she will buy it for me, so I have to wait until November - urgh.

HOWEVER... She's working tomorrow and the weather is looking decidedly mediocre. So I might pop into town and see if there are any bargains to be had. But shhh... Don't tell the missus. Fancy something to go with the crane above, so might look for an excavator/container truck/something similar.

I really want the arocs, but I just cant bring myself to fork out that much cash.
