I started rebuilding one of my old kits last night, it's #8440 a simple little single seater Indy style car.

I was amazed at how different the instructions are. The new kits tell you exactly where every part goes with arrows and pointers but working through the old book (it's from the mid 90's) I needed to study each drawing for ten minutes to find where the smallest pieces went. The big parts that get made up seperately and then added to the model are quite easy but the single pieces that are 2/3 studs were an absolute nightmare, it was like playing spot the difference between the drawing and the model. Perhaps I've just been spoilt with the new and easy to follow books or are Lego dumbing down?

So much fun, even the moaning from the OH was worth it hehe

I realise that this isn't a Technic kit but thought I'd ask the PH Lego massive anyway. Anyone know how the Star Wars Unique Collector Series previously fared in terms of rarity and value?

I think I read that the UCS Millennium Falcon changes hands for silly money now - but was that a limited availability release?

I ask simply because I'm curious whether the 10225 R2D2 kit is worth a punt on the basis of my being a Star Wars fan and it looking like a fun kit to build. I'm also wondering whether it's likely to appreciate if I box it back up in due course and parcel it up to be left in the loft. It would make the £150 cost more palatable if there was scope to recoup it in due course - and make it an easier sell to SWMBO.

She hasn't said so but I suspect she finds it amusing that a 40 year old bloke could be interested in building Lego kits - she knows I am interested in planes and so the recent Sopwith Camel acquisition sort of made sense to her. I suspect that if I up the geek level a notch to take in Star Wars Lego, eyebrows might be raised.... wink

I'm 41 and my parents bought me the UCS R2D2 for my birthday much to my wife's "amusement"!

It's a fun build and does include some technic aspects - the mechanism for the middle leg for example and it makes a great display model. I suspect it will appreciate in value over time like all the rare sets do but I'm not intending to sell mine as it's far too cool smile

I posted some images earlier in the thread but here's another link:

I can live with a certain amount of uxorial bemusement and condescension, if need be biglaugh I'm sure she'll just roll her eyes and write it off to an early mid-life crisis and big boys' toys! wink

My Lego collection is on display around the house. SWMBO quite likes it, especially the VW camper.
Recently my daughter and I have purchased a few of the Team GB minifigures.

Again, not Technic Lego but I thought it might be of interest to some who read here.

Play.com have 20% off Lord of the Rings Lego sets for today only. If the more expensive ones like Helm's Deep Mines of Moria at £69.99 tempt you, now's the time to snap them up. Use the voucher code LOTRLEGO20OFF

Shelob Attacks duly ordered in anticipation of the birthday of my Lego-mad god-son next month.

In other news, I won the Technic Supercar on ebay last night. Still cost me £12 more than it was recently on sale for in Boots though frown Ho hum.

Flatbed done. smile

On a side note I intend to get the huge excavator next. So I contacted Lego about the updated actuators which they have sent to me(I like to be prepared) there is another part which has been updated, something to do with the tracks and to make them more efficient.
Just a heads up to anyone already with or indeed building the excavator at the moment. smile

I have got the excavator in pieces all over the dining room table - what updated excavators (which piece, on what page & why do they need updating?)

Wasnt aware that they needed to be updated. Also what part regarding the tracks needs to be updated?

Who did you contact re the upgraded parts?

The big problem with Technic as that once you have bought one kit you tend to want to buy more. & it gets expensive........

I just phoned Lego Uk and they were very friendly and helpful.

Later on that day I received this e-mail. smile

Thanks for requesting extra parts to make your Excavator stronger!

We're pleased to send the replacement parts that you need to make the "digging arm" of your Excavator 8043 as strong as it should be.

While we were testing the new pieces, we realized that there was another improvement we could make, so we're also sending you an extra bag of pieces that should be included in the model at step 33 and 36 in the building instructions. These new pieces may help your Excavator to move backwards and forwards more efficiently.

We hope you enjoy building this great set and thank you again for your patience. Your pieces are on the way from Denmark and should arrive shortly! Please keep handy your reference number: 031429215A.

Happy Building!!

I have found Lego customer services to be one of the best I have used.
They always send out missing parts for any set without question and the staff are very knowledgable often talking about the set you are requesting parts for.
I have also bought spare sticker sheets for certain sets from them without any problem even when the set is out of production.

I have always found this as well on the rare occasion there has either been something wrong or missing from a set, but this time they haven't been as good for me. I emailed them yesterday to ask "how would I tell if the set I have is the updated version and has the new parts in it?" They replied and said that no upgrades were available for 8043 at all and sent me a link for the alternate build instructions instead. I put it down to a miscommunication but I shall be having another go, on the phone this time.

Excavator being picked up from Waitrose via John Lewis on Sunday. Using John Lewis wedding vouchers to by Lego has not gone down fantastically with SWMBO, but nevermind biggrin

Thanks to Russ, John Lewis and Ebay I now have the excavator, heli, crawler and crane truck to build. Should keep me going for a while.

Also, built the Sopwith camel while on Honeymoon (ahem) and now want to hang it on my Sons bedroom ceiling, out of reach and secure. Any ideas?

Hmmm I am stuck.

I have reached page 72 of the second manual of the supercar but do not have the long grey crossed pole / rod piece numbered 7, I have tried to retrace my steps and all seems fine.

Could anyone list the left over parts after building model a please.

Do you think Lego will send one out, I need to email them about the excavator parts too.
