After looking for a well priced big Technic set I ended up buying an old Test Car 8865 set from eBay. Spent the odd half hour here and there with my two little boys making it.
Spent three hours improving the detail, robustness and functionality last night, it was the most relaxing thing I've done in months. Having all the small bits from the big Lego mountain in one box was a great help, best result from my DIY multi-level Lego 'sieve' yet.
Trying to get the car powered now, but the gearbox is a bit weak.

Collected this earlier whilst out at Bluewater, wasnt until I got home i realised it didnt come with the power packs, anyone know anywhere cheaper than lego to buy them ?

Not a bad build and I quite like the chain drive up to the engine.
Can't decide which one to do next though. Thinking about either the big crane or the Volvo digger. A little over 12 months ago I built the Unimog which was a great build and looked the part.

Has it got to the point yet where it's worth selling my Supercar and Rescue Helicopter? Have the values gone up to more than they were new?
Coincidentally enough, I have both of these sitting in the wardrobe unbuilt - there's just no room for them alongside the Sopwith Camel, Mini, Campervan and the UCS X-Wing :/I'd be interested to hear what those in the know might think....

There are 2 good ways to find out prices for Lego sets, Bricklink and Ebay. Other places like Amazon only have advertised prices not what they actually sold for.I'd be interested to hear what those in the know might think....
For Bricklink: Look up the set number in the 'Catalog Items' search then click on the price guide link and refine the result for the UK to get actual sales for the past six months for New or Used items.

Used can mean no box, no manuals and missing parts, so still a tad vague.
Searching on Ebay for Lego 8070 then refine for UK and sold items only will let you see descriptions of condition as well. Obviously your net sale will be after fees, which are 10% for Ebay and 3% for Bricklink and another 3.4% ish for Paypal on both, probably postage as well. Selling through Gumtree, for cash, in person, will net more cash and also hassle

Cheers Colin - I'm vaguely aware of Bricklink but have never really explored it, so wasn't aware you could track sales that way. I can't speak for the other person posting about it but I'm certainly not actively looking to sell! I'd like to build them eventually. I suspect it will have to be when I disassemble something else to make way though!
So I've decided to build the Mobile Crane MK2 (42009) next. Can't wait for postie to deliver it!! Is there anything to be particularly aware of when building this one? Following a bit of advice found elsewhere I've ordered some non-friction tan axle pins for the outriggers and I've also read about a small mod to the booms LA's gearing to prevent a bit of binding.

Make sure you put the gears on the right way round when building the outriggers s111dpc said:

Cheers for that! It's arrived now and looking through the all the bags I can tell this is going to be an amazing build. I'm not going to rush this one, primarily to ensure no errors during the build seeing as it is a fairly complex model.
Mobile Crane 42009 is £110.93 on Amazon at the moment: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00B0IDCJM

Yep, I originally paid £139 for it but the price dropped to £110 whilst it was in transit. I politely asked Amazon if they would refund the difference which they accepted. Here's the helicopter:
A few bits were missing off this one, the grey swing arm for the winch, the hook itself, and the grey disc that goes on top of the main rotor.
Also this dude:
That one's complete though it uses a lot more standard parts. Apart from the number plates which fell off due to non-stickyness.
