I actually think the good doctor's model building demonstrates the sheer effort and perseverence required to turn out award winning models.

Well done sir.

What actually won the class? It must have been something extra special to beat that Tornado.

Thanks very much. This is the helicopter that won:

I assumed it would be in the diorama class, but on closer inspection maybe not.

It's obviously beautifully detailed but I'd much prefer to look at Kim Bassenger than her skeleton.

I'm so 1970s so she's still a doll to me. Hell, sometimes I look at the front cover of Saga and say "She's nice".

Is she in any way related to Kim Basinger?

Doc, Congratulations! all that effort paid off smile

Have you worked out exactly how many hours you spent on it? or would you pass out if you ever knew?

Ta very much!

I've no idea about how long it took - I don't log hours!

I didnt like it when I saw it and I still dont

It is so blooming unrealistic it just makes me cringe

Really, that much work on the airframe and it still has its engines transmission and rotor systems attached

To me it is just bulls**ne

And it seems to represent a new "warts with no skin and all" treatment of models, there were a few similarly attired models in the competition and round the displays on some club stands

I'm not about to join the trend

Doc's Mighty Fin represents an aircraft in service with a job to do

And in the flesh it is even more subtly awesome

Nice model doc, very nice

Ha ha thanks Perdu. Clearly a lot of work had gone into the winning model - certainly more than mine. Fair enough it wasn't to my taste either, but if you enter a competition you accept the judges decision. For me, in terms of improving my modelling, I get more from building a model with the intention of having it judged than just building it for the sake of it. Unexpectedly getting a plaque and certificate even though it came second (plus the boy getting a new kit as a prize too) made it a great day out for us.

As an aside (and I think I've got this right): It turned out at the presentation of prizes that the person who built the winning helicopter was apparently the editor of a Polish modelling magazine, and - again if I understood correctly, had donated one of the prizes awarded at the show, awarded for a new class, the name of which I can't remember.

Hmm

I'm glad I didn't put the Scout up in the competition, lots of work in it but no way a show stopper like the ones in there

My wife asked me if I would and was miffed that I said no

"All that work, all that time and you won't even bother to enter!"

frown

Still she didn't hold a huge grudge, still had a lovely roast chicken dinner ready for me.

smile

(I couldn't have beaten that Tornado anyway) smile

Personally, I like to look at competition models at a show because that is where many of the 'not previously seen' models are. A lot of the stuff on club stands is the same year on year. Therefore if I've built a model that I think looks good, I'll enter it for the same reason - I like to look at other people's work, so I assume mine contribute in some way whether they are good enough to win a prize or not. For example, I saw your Scout in the competition at Telford, and despite there being hundreds of other models there, it helped to make the competition hall a fascinating place to spend some time.

Amazing model and attention to detail, if you ever want to sell it let me know as I'm friends with one of the pilots who's name is on the side! He might be interested! Still have my Merlin in a box on the shelf gathering dust!
