Artist thinks he's painting a Beaufort maybe...
IN what respect? Just curious because my neighbour flies a Catalina but it's freshly painted not sea stained like this one.

Roy Cross was the artist. His paintings were the best of their era.
I can recommend this book - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vintage-Years-Airfix-Box-A...

I've been very tempted by that book in the past.

I was, bought it a while ago, really is a brilliant book with some fantastic pictures. If only you could be reproductions, I'd have the Lancaster picture with the engine on fire coming down to land.

Adam Tooby did a CGI version for a re-release of Airfix's 1980 Lancaster kit (now superseded).

This version IS available as a print from -

Hmmm call me picky, although an excellent modern version of that Lancaster picture, I just don't think the CGI pictures have any.... Character? They're just too clinical! Roy Cross' pictures just have that something about them. I like that CGI one, it's a great alternative since the original isn't available.

Rich the clue is on the engine nacelles

Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasps do not have a front mounted exhaust collector ring, they exhaust at the back of the engine via an internally mounted ring system

As I am making my own PBY5A (Airfix one) I have researched many photos and NONE have engines like the one used by the latest art work. The front of all Catalina engines is plain painted aloominum.

His rendition of salt stained airframes is fine, nay, bloody good but he seems to have believed in conventional wisdom

"Radials have bronzey coloured front ends"

some do some don't

I do love the Typhoon and Mossie from earlier, lovely stuff

I like both - and the modern boxes are a million times better than what we had to put up with in the 80s and 90s.

Adam Tooby attends Scalemodelworld at Telford each year and his artwork is stunning when seen at its full size.

Unless she was swooping down to pick you up out of freezing seas or bomb the merryhell out of a U boat that is shelling your ship the Cat was never a pretty 'plane but I love 'em.

I'm not awfully good at Americana Airforceana but shouldn't the 'stangs have red stripes by the time of Korea?

Lovely artwork though. Fair takes me back to the good old days.

The Tamiya version in 1/48 scale looked pretty similar, I built that kit a few years back.

I wonder if I made the same mistake Eric is referring to? biggrin

I don't see anything wrong there, what was the problem?

Hi doc, I think Eric was remarking on the Airfix artwork for the Korean War F51D being in WWll stars and bars.

The USAF when inaugurated in 1947 added the thin red stripe to the blue and white bars around the star emblems which has been seen as 'normal' ever since.

The F51 that Slipstream has built and shown carries the correct red centre stripe on its bars.

I love the Mustang, this one is especially nice

Correct, the red bars are missing.

The decals are correct though.

Ha

Rather like the Catalina not having exhaust collector rings in the kit then Eric smile

So if I was interested in a Korean War F51 the kit would be OK then

Good news
