Saw that P-51 perform at Mustang. They had to carry out a tailwheel change before he could display - made for interesting viewing.

I hadn't noticed the collector rings on the Catalina - shows how rubbish my powers of observation are.

No Eric mate, it shows you just how horribly anal getting too far into the 'detailing' side of the hobby can get.

I'm about to begin a build OOB just to see if I can

Red Arrows Gnat

Only work to be making parts fit straightish

We'll see...

I was going to build the Mustang OOB, but if you have the hood open, it's a shame not to add a decent instrument panel, and belts...plus you need a vacform hood to be able to fit it open...etc etc.

Having said that, the OOB class at IPMS competitions allows fitting belts and brake lines and other small details so it's not so bad.

Have a look at his artwork for the Korean War era F-51D Mustang and spot the error smile

I'm not awfully good at Americana Airforceana but shouldn't the 'stangs have red stripes by the time of Korea?

Lovely artwork though. Fair takes me back to the good old days.
The Tamiya version in 1/48 scale looked pretty similar, I built that kit a few years back.

I wonder if I made the same mistake Eric is referring to? biggrin
I don't see anything wrong there, what was the problem?
haha

the original artwork (and the decals) were correct- the error was made by the graphic design agency (who we don't use any more) that composited the artwork onto the packaging artwork. Two layers were reversed, so the red stripe got "hidden" underneath the rest of the roundel. This was corrected on the second production run, so only very early issues of the box have the error.

I will have a moan about the catalina artwork though! I don't have much to do with that side of things as it's a re-issue rather than a new tool- I would have spotted that though- I know the difference between british and 'merican radial engines smile

Airfix has done very well this year, suprizingly so actually, the issues have been with Hornby and scalextric. Probably shouldn't say much more on a public forum though. Big steps have been made with the new management team to sort the issues though so hopefully Hornby will have a better year in 2014/15.

Good news.

The important thing for any business is to react quickly and effectively when it spots a problem.

Note for future reference.

Early F51s will instantly become rarities "just because" they don't have red stripe stars and bars wink

Later "proper job" ones will be ignored in the rush to find wrong 'uns...

Can you tell I've been around these mogglers for far too long Matt.

I expect its far too late to do anything about the Cat though, it was even wrong in March's page of the 2014 Airfix Calendar.

Red face day? Month?

Not to worry, take pleasure from the lovely Tiger Moth.

A real credit to Airfix from what I've seen.

On my list.

Roy Cross was the artist. His paintings were the best of their era.

It's not my favourite Cross painting I have to say.
