3D Printer is awesome

Quick tip, as I work with 3D printing amongst other things....
I'd move away from PLA in the long term for a couple of reasons. The material is designed to bio-degrade and as such it will pull moisture out of the air and eventually fall apart. If you leave a reel exposed to air for any length of time you will find it will become very brittle and will crack and break very easily. If you put PLA in water it will eventually dissolve as well, so its not a good idea to make a PLA boat
ABS is a good engineering material that will last a long time, also try PETT. Its the same material that plastic bottles are made from. It doesn't try and warp as much as ABS....
One of the things I want to use my 3d printer for is making the little trim bits on Audi Quattros that Audi no longer make - so thanks for that advice!I'd move away from PLA in the long term for a couple of reasons. Nylon is used in the SLS process and is excellent, I've used it on slot car chassis and produced over 200 of them.
It's very tough, resistant to heat (at least the heat of a Scalextric motor!) and is quite easy to work with a scalpel. It doesn't take sandpaper well but I'm not sure if that's the process or the material.

We've just used it for a version of the FDM printed aircraft I linked to earlier. Much tougher than ABS and IIRC around 60% greater strength in z direction too. It's very tough, resistant to heat (at least the heat of a Scalextric motor!) and is quite easy to work with a scalpel. If I had access to a 3D printer, one of these would be my next purchase:

When the prices of 3D printers to drop a bit more, I won't be able to resist

Wow, that's cheap. I wonder if it's actually any good?http://www.printerland.co.uk/Sense-3D-Scanner-P133...

Working model V6
I checked out that scanner, it's crap.

Not a 3D printer admittedly, infact very much a 2D machine (although you can make 3D things with it if you're good at design) but I just got this delivered yesterday...
Can't wait to get producing stuff with it, got to wait until next thursday before I can start using it though!
You don't have to be too good at design. You just need an ipad, an app called '123D Make' and an online PDF to dxf converter: Can't wait to get producing stuff with it, got to wait until next thursday before I can start using it though!

My old man has a Speedy 500, should you ever find yourself a little short of cutting area give him a try: www.thelaserworkshop.com - Shameless plug! Can't wait to get producing stuff with it, got to wait until next thursday before I can start using it though!

Hmmm... nothing to do with 3D models, but I may have some work for your Dad. Is there a PHer discount? Saw this in the paper the other day.. http://www.gabrielaligenza.com/collections/3D-prin...

I've already got an overspill contact (I was using them to make my products before I brought it in house) but will give him a shout to see if he can beat their prices!Gassing Station | Scale Models | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
