Belting Price for the Big Airfix Typhoon
Discussion
Hornby singled out the sales success of this model in their latest trading statement.
Hornby's saviour - the £99.99 Hawker Typhoon
8,000 kits sold.
Hornby's saviour - the £99.99 Hawker Typhoon
8,000 kits sold.
Is that the first time that Airfix have given official sales figures for a single kit?
I hope it's a harbinger of better times and perhaps an indicator of the subject matter that may generate sales for Airfix.
Also, I think the way Airfix conducted its advance promotion of the Typhoon was spot on.
I won't comment on the factual errors about the "real" Typhoon in the article as they are not really relevant to the main story.

The first replacement canopies are out from Alley Cat, at a mere £10 (ouch). From the Hannants' bumph:

The new super scale Airfix 1:24 Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB has set new levels and heights in kit design and is proving very popular. Alley Cat has developed a new canopy set for the kit cast in clear resin. These are direct replacement parts for the kit, some production problems have been noted on some kit canopies. The new resin canopies resolve these issues and are now offered as an alternative. To resolve some of the problems (and to assist in casting) we have needed to increase the thickness of the main sliding canopy by about 0.6mm at the thickest point. We are sure that this will be acceptable to most modellers and that with the new canopy set you can build and finish your fantastic new Typhoon (designed to be used with Airfix kits)
0.6mm extra seems quite a lot for such a thin item. Presumably indicative of them being unable to reliably produce a product to the same thickness as Airfix attempted.Zad said:

Vacform or crash moulded transparent acetate would be an excellent (and cheap) solution; that's what I'd do. You could even use the existing framing with a bit of cutting.Hannants said:

Heads-up chaps. This is on an Amazon deal of the day starting at 6pm this evening.
What does that mean in terms of price? It's at just under £90 at the moment.Glad I ordered when I did, looking forward to having a look in the box when I get back from my next trip.
What would be really good is to have a masterclass from some of the more proficient modellers here using the actual kit.....
Eric......dr_gn.......
p.s. about to order the airbrush Eric........ watch this space, paint splatters everywhere no doubt

Ted at Emodels is doing a video blog build:

Not a perfect build by any means, and obviously sponsored by Emodels, but worth a look to see how it goes together, and one or two pitfalls to avoid.

I was very tempted, but in the end couldn't quite justify it: Too many models in the stash, and after all it's a huge model to display. I did call my pal though, who apparently ordered one - probably for loft insulation judging by his glacial build times.
If it was £50 I'd have one. If you believe the Amazon figures, less than 50% of their stock was sold at £70, so maybe £50 is do-able in a few months time, maybe from the LHS.
What I'd really like to see in 1:24 is an inter-war biplane like the Hawker Fury or Demon. At that scale, Airfix could give Wingnut Wings a run for their money, and it would be an excellent showcase for fabric/metal surface finishes, plus the dozens of detail features present on an old biplane. I doubt there would be enough customers, but they would be guaranteed at least one sale...
