Took my nephew to Flying Legends and he was taken by the Spitfires, and before he goes back home I thought I'd build one oob and personalise the ID lettering with his initials. Now i could try working out what mark he liked best, but he's getting a mk1 as that what i have in the build pile. What would be the best way to get the letters? I did think letraset, but I dont know if they do them to the correct scale?

Thanks

Easy: Do a search on Hannants website for 1:72 RAF codes:

Or, if you give me the letters you need I might have some spares.

Thanks Doc, am after CMC. I'll get the sheet, but thank you for the kind offer of spares if you had them

Guess you'll need 2 sheets to get all the same "C"'s ?

ETA I've not got those letters in the spares tray - in fact I've not got any "M"'s at all.

Looking at the sheet I could cut down one of the "O" types and produce a C but not much chance if it goes wrong

Looks possible, you've also got plenty of "O"'s and "Q"'s to butcher.

Just need some "P"'s and four candles...

Here is the finisher Mk1. In the end the code sheet the good Doc suggested was a little too big, so I ordered some off ebay, they are white rather than a cream colour, but a 9 year old won't worry, it's just going to hang from the ceiling.

I tried some adhesive masks for the camo, a real bugger to line up, and it's left some ridges where i have sprayed. Could this be because i was heavy with the paint layering?
Also need to figure why the brown is glossy, but not the green, as both paints were matt

Doesnt look bad at all.

What paints did you use? Usually matt drying gloss is becasue of old paint, or not stirred enough. I think the only thing that would give ridges is too thick paint as you suggest.

If the matt-gloss bothers you, get some Humbrol #49 acrylic spray (matt clear), mask of the canopy and give it a light coat, it will then all be a uniform matt finish. Test it first on some scrap bits.

Thanks Doc smile

I had a look at the paint, and it was an older tin, probably one I bought last year, would that be 'too old'?
Next model I build I'll paint more evenly and in thinner layers, though I may not bother with the masks and make my own.

Have definately re-caught the build bug, might do a car next as something different

No, I'm talking 10-20 year old paint. Maybe you just applied it too thick - that can sometimes give inconsistent drying?
