Lets assume you have the correct fuel and the glow plug is ok ..

Start with the main needle open 2 turns, it should start and be very rich. Slowly lean it out.

I also assume you have not 'played' wit the low speed needle.

If you don't understand what I am saying .. look up BRCA and find your local club

I had the same problem to day trying to start my two Savages, found the engine had flooded so I just took the filters off and blew it through.

Don't want to be too much of a wet blanket for you, but Nitros are the quickest way to piss even determined adults off with the hobby. Nitros are famously temperamental, & just need no end of adjusting, depending on if cold or warm. The fuel is relatively expensive, & it goes off relatively quickly. Your best bet would have been at least petrol, or indeed electric - although I personally think the exposure to a real engine is a big part of the magic. Good luck with the nitros, if you keep them!!

to counter the doom and gloom a little... I have a an HPI nitro buggy that has sat in the garage for 10+ years since later used, with nothing done since the engine last stopped (not flushed through or filled with oil etc etc). I filled her up with the old fuel I had, charged up the glow plug supply and had a go at starting. It took quite a few tugs on the starter but she then sprang into life and runs fine. I did get a new glow plug and fuel once I knew she was a 'runner'.

HOWEVER... electric now with the advances in batteries and motors will last 'ages' on a battery (not the 5 mins max of old) and be just as fast as a nitro without the mess and neighbour/other beach users being too annoyed by the noise.

Just to add to the words already posted I went through 4 nitro cars of various cost and expense before finally admitting defeat and getting fed up of full on strip down and rebuilds every time I took one out for an hour.

I've still got two left. One needs a few bits to rebuild it since it argued with a kerb and lost (anyone who wants a good home for a set of front shocks (tarmac spec), steering knuckle and fuel tank of a Thunder Tiger EB4 S2 please let me know...) and the other hasn't seen the light of day since it last refused to start and run clean about 3 years ago.

A few months ago I bought a Tamiya normal boggo electric. Enjoyed a rainly weekend building it and have already had much fun out of it. Bought 2 3000 batteries with it and a quick charger and they will outlast my time/interest available. It isn't as fast as the nitros but it's a load of fun and I don't have to find somewhere to use it or bother if it's 10pm and I fancy a blast in the garden/drive. I'm already looking at the next possible car and am likely to go brushless at some point but shall not be buying any more nitro cars for the foreseeable.

Cos it's for your kids, I'm minded to second the pointers towards electric. That's nothing to turn one's nose up at - most model land speed records are made by electric (100mph+).
If it were for you (i.e. someone who might 'get' the petrol/smell & sound of engines thing) - then I'd have suggested petrol (two-stroke). Playing with garden machinery convinced me of just how reliable these engines are these days, & so it is with a half decent model - they 'just work', & sound fantastic.
