Do you also have the special, slightly fragile 6 x 18 flat which sits on the motor unit to provide a base for locomotive superstructures?
These?

Two a penny in our house, along with old gears, white axles, flags...the lot biggrin

Re. prototyping: I managed to secure a load of Technic stuff from Lego for work. We use it for prototyping, it's great for getting buy-in from customers (some pretty big customers too) when they can see something working. Also use Meccano - mentioned in the O/P article as well I notice - for proof of concept. This is my Meccano concept for a gearbox that automatically changes ratio depending on the input direction. It was for use in drilling through stacks of metal/composite/metal in confined spaces where there was no room for complex gear selection controls:

ETA: Mine look like 6x16 locomotive plates.

Holy crap!

I've not seen that lot in about 20 years - I had blue rails and that very motor....

The strange thing is, my parents got me the locomotive, but not the track. I guess that could have triggered all sorts of emotional disorders in a four year old?

It's only this year that someone gave my son a job lot of his son's old Lego, and the track and other rail stuff was in with it. So 40 years on, I finally get to play with my lego train. My social worker says she has noticed a distinct improvement in my behaviour ever since.

I use Lego as a release - it's not kids, work or family. My imagination runs away with me - it's the composite pieces that I find is taking away from the Lego ethos.

I spent weeks building a tilt-rotor craft - the cockpit was made up of sections, not like the official one that has a single piece which I was disappointed with...

While sifting through my late Dad's papers and getting thoroughly depressed, I came accross this Lego leaflet from 1975 which cheered me up a bit:

I had the blue F1 car, and still have a lot of it I think.

On balance I'd say that any perceived loss of versatility of Lego is far outweighed by the increase in realism over the decades. And after all you can still buy tubs of generic Lego if you don't like the specific bits I guess.

Box 3 & 2 in that pic look very familiar.

I definitely had the Lunar module and I think I had the F1 car but not 100%.

I think my mum still has loads of my regular lego in the loft, I sold my technics sets.

We went for an early xmas recently and the kids spent hours playing with my old matchbox cars and track. Just two parallel tracks racing the cars. Modern car tracks are too complex and limited to one or two set ups.
