Hi all, I am after your help....

My wife has asked me the other day what I want for Christmas and I knew straight away it would be a RC kit but I don't know which one.

I have not built one since I was playing around with my Grasshopper and Midnight Pumpkin kits when I was 15 smile The kit I always wanted was the BigWig, purely because it looked cool and the HotShot really appealed to me too but these were always out of reach financially.

My question really is which kit should I go for? I know that's a bit of a silly question but what I am looking for is something that is VERY technical to build with lots of bits to put together (like the differential and suspension etc) preferably with lots of carbon bits and metal fluid filled shock absorbers and stuff like that biggrin

I loved building them more than the actual playing with them if truth be told and its the build process I will derive most enjoyment from.

Can anyone suggest a kit that will fill my needs?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

hehe

I would love to build something like a HotShot or a BigWig (the original kit with the blister packaging and all the original sponsor logo's etc) but those are a silly prices on ebay frown

Can you recommend a kit that would be difficult and technical? Maybe something with a metal differential that I could put together and metal shocks etc?

Tamiya's Hotshot has recently been re-released, slightly differing from the original model using modern plastics etc. If this is what you wanted as a kid then this will be the model you will want to get hold of. I used to work at Time Tunnel Models and would thoroughly recommend them - if you phone them and ask for Neil, he grew up in the 80s so will know exactly what you're after.

It also depends on what you want from the end product; will you be using it frequently or only ocasionally? Will it be admired on a shelf? There is a wide range out there of detailed or frugal kits you can build from.

Yup:

I know it's not maybe what you had in mind, and you might need to find one on EBay, but it's pretty much full of gears and clever mechanisms...More than enough to keep you quiet for several evenings over Christmas.

Depending on budget - for an interesting build try one of the 1/14th Trucks
http://www.modelsport.co.uk/rc-electric-models/rc-...

3 Speed gearbox (no pr-assembled) working suspension etc
There is an additional model for sound, lights & vibration
http://www.modelsport.co.uk/tamiya-multi-function-...

Almost everything can be operated remotely.

Most of the re-releases are interesting builds, whereas the more modern stuff tends to be designed for quick assembly.

For running over almost anything try the Axila Wraith plus some choice upgrades

Test her resolve and ask for 2x full option 1/16 tanks plus battle system.

More interesting to build than the cars IMO, and when you're done you can have fights with them smile

Avante is probably one of the more technical cars you can buy ReRe http://www.modelsport.co.uk/tamiya-avante-2011/rc-...

Or, if pockets are especially deep then one of the three speed 4x4s : http://www.modelsport.co.uk/tamiya-toyota-4x4-pick...
You`ll need a 3 channel transmitter to work the gear change smile

There are lots of technical build threads for each if you google

The Schumacher range sounds more like what you are looking for, it's a step or two up from the Tamiya Hotshot:

Off road: http://www.modelsport.co.uk/schumacher-cat-k1-aero...

Another level, but tarmac/carpet:
http://www.modelsport.co.uk/schumacher-mi5evo-pro-...

Back in the day when I raced them as a kid these were the ones all the Pros had.

Tamiya (if you want RC) are going to be the way to go imho. Then you need to decide how fast and or how much detail you want to go into with the build.

The Tanks and Trucks are quite slow things but great builds (if a little pricey £500 or so for the kit) you will then need radio, battery and charger on top of that. Plus paints and glues.

I’m in the process of rebuilding my Tamia Tiger II (considerable scale detail parts, lights, metal tracks) and its incredible what you can buy for them – you can easily spend as much as the kit again in extras!

The thread of my initial build of the Tiger II is on here somewhere.

IF you want to go faster there are plenty of other kits made by Tamiya smile
