Hello all ...

I have a new flat with some new furniture including a console table (never heard of one of them before!) which has a bloody great space on it that screams model racing car to me.

Now, apart from a dabble with a Revell Audi R10 (1:24 I think) I haven't built a model in ages so I'm a long way out of touch with what's good these and I'm looking for suggestions for a model (maybe 12-14" long) that would be a good reintroduction. If it helps my favourite ever build was 1:12 Tamiya Lotus 72 when I was about 14 (so 36 years ago) and I'd love something of that complexity.

Pref F1 or Le Mans car and not too modern ... any ideas?

Really, any of the Tamiya 1/12 racing car series. Always fancied a go at the Honda as it' same bit left-field and interesting.

If you can find one of the 1/12 Porsche 934 or 935 kits they are very interesting. Then of course there are the two Caterham 7 "Master" series kits in 1/12 with alloy bodies and a build thread on PH. Of course, if really want a challenge, find one of the Pocher 1/8 kits of an Alfa or Bugatti or Merc and prepare for the long haul. On my Alfa model the wheels are built up from rims, centres and individual spokes, all metal of course, and it' seas to get it wrong. Fancy stitching your own seats? Pocher kit for you.

That 1:12 Team Lotus Type 49 is superb.

I can not find any reviews on it, does any one know how accurate and how good a model it is?

It's very old but builds OK, the DFV isn't the one everyone knows from the Tyrrells, Wolf, M23 etc but an older slightly larger version to allow for motorization. The cockpit is compromised to allow for the unused battery box and some of the suspension pivots aren't as clever as the later 1/12th models. If it was me I'd be buying/building something post Lotus 72D (and even that is quite long in the tooth).

The Tamiya 1:12 Williams FW14b is a nice build with a fair amount of detail. Better than the Lotus 72 to my mind.

Worth pointing out that the images in that link in no way represent the model as built straight from the box...it's hugely modified with aftermarket and hand-built detail parts.

Hardly a surprise given both were modelled when the respective subjects were current. Just as technology moved F1 cars along massively, model manufacturers abilities moved on similarly.

I have, unbuilt & all in 1:12 scale, the Tamiya Porsche 934, Porsche 935, McLaren MP4/6 & Williams FW14.

All are stunning models when built however I don't have the time to build them which makes me sad.

However to console me I have the Tamiya 1:12 Ferrari 641 (I think) which is signed by Mr Mansell himself.

Takes pride of place in a cabinet full of Tamiya models back at my parents house.

The Tamiya 1:12 kits are unbeatable IMO for their attention to detail.

I'm sure there are some very skillful people on here who would love to build them for you ......

Just a thought, and just to be clear I am most certainly NOT one of them.

Unless of course you intend getting round to them "sometime" ...

I have had a couple of offers for these kits & the others that I have stored in a cupboard (not too mention the 200 model cars that I have) however I have resisted the temptation to sell them

Even though I turned down £800 for the four Tamiya kits i mentioned earlier........

I came home from a ride the other week to see my neighbour in his garage looking at some Tamiya kits that he had found in his Mum's loft after a clear out.

All his childhood model kits and toys, but pride of place was the part built 1/12th Porsche 935.

What a model, tyres packaged in Porsche logo'd boxes, real hoses for fuel and brake lines etc.

At the time I said it would probably be worth some money so we checked on eBay and there was an. admittedly inbuilt kit but it was around £500 from the U.S.!

I have a part built Tamiya 1/12th Porsche 935 in its box upstairs, last worked on over ten years ago. A couple of winters ago I thought I'd do a bit more and opened the box - everything's there, just as I left it except the chassis/engine/interior assembly I'd finished is nowhere to be found frown
