I'm looking for a quadcopter no more than £100 with a camera as a gift, there are hundreds by the looks of it.

Can anyone recommend one?

It has to be easy to fly, I don't really mind the size but I'm guessing bigger might be better, and I would like a camera on it. I'm not sure if I want a live feed? Picture quality would probably come before a live feed.

Have a look on banggood.com (really!) - they have loads. I bought one with a fixed camera but no FPV for about £40 18 months ago, before the market for these things went mad. There are much better ones for not a lot more now. Last time I looked they had one with FPV for £79. Ordered from China but there were no issues with delivery, I seem to recall it took a little while to arrive but they were upfront about that.

Look up the Syma X5C, it's like a baby rip off Phantom, fixed camera, but very easy to fly. I bought one and had some fun times with it taking photos of the house etc from the air.

For the price, they're massive fun. You can get spare batteries too. It's very easy to fly, I buzz mine around the local football pitch, it does stunt flips, remote controlled still camera/video camera, all sorts. And the LEDs look cool at dusk.

Make sure you're familiar with the rules related to Drone flying in the UK (if you are in the UK). This wont effect your choice of drone but it will effect where and when you can fly. Contrary to some belief the same rules apply to both hobbyists and commercial operators. Info here:

Are these sub £100 ones actually any good?

Obviously i'm not expecting Phantom levels of performance but are they worth spending the money on??

Yes. They're like a gateway drug. I bought mine (linked above) and it tickled an itch for a summer, then I went and bought a Phantom for about 20 times the price. Massive fun and for 40-odd quid it doesn't matter if you smash it in to a tree or plonk it in a river.

I know this will annoy the CAA types but as long as you're sensible and don't fly it in to a school or around a town centre then you'll be absolutely fine. I live in an area surrounded by fields and it's cracking fun.

Hubsan X4 H107C
I bought one and spare parts,a spare couple of batteries for less than £100.

I'm too supid and impatiant to get it flying well, but it works in a slight breeze outside and is small enough to fly inside.
The camera isn't too bad, no sound but the film goes straight onto an sdcard. I dont think you'll get fly by camera at your price point, as I looked for that too.

No expert though!
If you youtube the hubsan you'll see plenty of footage recorded with the onboard camera.

Interesting what has been said about the SYMA X5 because quite by coincidence we were shopping over at Meadowhall in Sheffield yesterday and wandered into the RED5 gadget and gift shop which is located on the lower level next to the Oasis food hall, and was quite astonished to note that it was selling the SYMA X5 SC EXPLORERS 2 in white and black, plus The Hubsan X4 and the Q4 quadcopter which is being advertised as the world's smallest quadcopter and have to say it was minuscule, was highly tempted to buy one or more of them because they did look very interesting indeed. I think they had a few other quadcopters on sale but was kind of in a daze over the level of kit in the shop.

Highly recommended, but best leave your wife or girlfriend at home for this shopping experience because they just don't understand the fascination with this kind of stuff, well at least my wife didn't by the look of displeasure on her face!

I took a few pics of the store and the quadcopter just to remind myself to go and visit again at a later date cool

I've got an X4 - its great fun for the ten minutes the battery lasts but it's very very small.

Works OK outside on very very still days, but good fun in the house.

House much was the Syma at Red5? more expensive than the links above i'm guessing?

It's only down the road for me you see......

No worries, the RED5 price is shown on the box and is £69 for the X5, they were also selling one without the camera fitted which was cheaper. Looks damn good fun smile

Been looking at getting a drone, as I'd heard about this FPV racing. As it happens, it was my birthday, and a friend gave me the Hubsan X4 HD out of the blue. What a gift! The battery it comes with is good for about 6 minutes, but have bought another 4 higher capacity ones (500 vs 380mAH) for a tenner. The camera is not bad for such a tiny thing, 1280x720, but no sound obvs.

As a first drone, it's good fun. It can actually carry 50grams, which is enough for FPV gear apparently, but will wait a bit I think.

Proly going to sell my power kites which should fund a longer lasting/bigger drone for using with goggles. We shall see!

Look at the Syma X8C also. I bought one a couple of months back and love it. It's a bit bigger than the x5 so is a bit more stable flying outdoors, though with no gps hold can still be caught by gusts of wind easily enough.

It's exactly the same size as a Phantom, and flying time is approx 10mins. Also comes with the same 2MP camera as the X5, though I binned that and strapped my go pro on as I bought it solely for taking pictures of the new house being built.

Great fun and I'm already planning to upgrade to a Phantom Professional in the future!

This was me pissing about with my x5c when I first got it. It's not great but then it was just learning to fly it and not crash it.

that looks pretty good!

do you have to just fly 'by eye' or are there any displays?

It's all by eye. A button on the remote will take a photo if you flick it one way, or a video if you flick it the other. If you were taking a video of something specific you could probably get a better result but I was just messing. It's a lot of fun for 50 quid! smile
