Having a think you might want to check this out too if you go the RTR route:

As another option.

Ok, this thread has rekindled a love of radio control cars from when I was a kid (a Tyco Fastraxx was as good as it got for me). I've recently purchased a house with a large lawn and some decent sized gravel areas, I also go to the beach on a semi-regular basis. What R/C car/buggy would people in the know recommend to me for some off road fun, don't want to break the bank, just something capable and sturdy to have some fun with.
Oh god I remember my Fastraxx! The funnest RC car I've ever had I think, especially on a tennis court sized expanse of wet marble. That thing would 2-track drift for days...... biggrin

My parents couldn't afford to by the real RC one. So got me an even smaller version that ran on a couple of AA batterys and didn't have steering or anything. Ahh cloud9 (I was 5, it was great at the time)

Hey, wow, small world. Did he build it and then they wanted it when they saw it, or was it commissioned?

They also have a couple of the "base" cars that they've made models of, including a Tyrrell P34 (yes, the 6-wheel one), of all things!

Spent a few late evenings building a monster beetle for my then young son, now in his thirties.

I loved my RC cars as a kid. Had a tamiya hornet first when I was about 12 then upgraded to a manta ray a couple of years later. Got into racing them at that point but the club I went to was very serious & the manta Ray couldn't compete. Upgraded it a fair bit but it was never as competitive as I would've liked. Eventually saved up & went for a Schumacher cougar. That was a really nice, simple & very easily upgraded 1/10 scale car. Really wish I still had them all. Great hobby & hopefully one my own kids will get into at some point.

He built one for a guy near him in Germany who has a massive RC collection (as in a building full!) and Tamiya got wind and bought it so he did the Wild Willys instead for the local guy.

I got a 'Wild Willy' when I was 15...
This was the original version: swing axles at the front, giant tyres and wheels with masses of unsprung weight, coil sprung live axle at the rear and no dampers. As unsophisticated as its owner.

Good times cloud9
Same here, same age, still got it and am halfway through restoring it, doing the shell at the moment, the running gear is all done. It's the one on the right, the one on the left is a SWB that happened to get bought while I was looking for bits for the other one ......... Dangerous game restoring old Tams wink

That'll probably do as a start, there are other options and if you want a 2wd racing buggy (can be used for bashing), then there is a nice kit option for doing this on a budget and end up with a really high performing machine at the end of it.

Have a look and feel free to shoot me a PM if you want more info, or recommendations on anything specific.
300bhp,

Wow: thank you very much for such a detailed and useful answer.

I had done a little research on non-Tamiya self-assembly options and feared that you were going to say that most of the world had gone RTR. So it was very helpful to be shown the Hobbyking links. Thank heavens there is time to do some prep before Xmas.
The FTX Carnage also looks interesting - maybe I will buy myself a present too...

Thank you also for the info on LiPo batteries. I had heard about those and brushless motors but had no idea that LiPo needed more care than NiMH batteries.

Regards, Tom

I've still got my original beetle at my old bedroom in my Dad's house. If I recall I upgraded the motors and stripped the gearbox as a result but I may have to dig it out and take another look!

This thread reminded me about a Tamiya Lunchbox (Re-issue) that I have in the garage. So I dusted it off on Saturday and took it to Birches Valley in Cannock Chase for a blast. My 4 year old daughter had no chance keeping up with it on her bike. It was great fun, and got me thinking back to the Thunder Shot that my mate had back in the late eighties/early nineties. Following a quick search on ebay, I now have a newly refurbished Thundershot on route via MyHermes. I'll update when it arrives. Can't wait!
