excellent - love it smile

i'm struggling with PNF and understanding what Tx and Rx work with what FC let alone self build

so i just bought a Diatone Tyrant S instead and got a Turnigy TGY-i10 Tx /Rx

Looking forward to having something slightly more punchy than the walkera

The FC will be independant of whatever tx/rx you use. But you will need to choose correctly whether you are using ppm, sbus or ibus. And make sure you set the low/mid/high limits of the channels correctly in your flight software or it will be all over the plaace.
Here is my first quad build.
Its a Realacc X210 V+, Racerstar 2205S motors, Spedix 25A esc, Swift2 cam and a Matek F405 and PDB combo (joins via a ribbon so cuts down a lots of extra soldering). Waiting on a VTX and antennas before first fpv maiden, only hovered so far to check configuration.

Seems most quad people use FrSky Taranis, a very capable transmitter that will do all and more than you require.
You then have a range of rx, and out of those, you won't go wrong with the X4RSB, CPPM/ SBUS and easily replaceable antenna for 20 odd quid. All FC worth their salt will work with FrSky in either CPPM or SBUS (or both so you have a choice).

New build kinda finished, need to add some LEDs so I can see it, and equally importantly, be seen.

I've been winding up the dog/cat/wife around the house with an Eachine E010C (quad) & VR007 goggles for a couple of weeks and am loving it.
I have decided to upgrade to a Taranis Q-X7 & Eachine QX95 for some outside flying and aero mode without huge financial/physical risk. Now impatiently waiting for delivery!

Any tips for a beginner?

Get used to acro mode as soon as possible so that you don't have to unlearn habits picked up in level mode. I found acro mode was actually easier and more natural after a very short while.

Thanks, that is a confidence inspiring video - after a while of watching Rotor Riot/Johnny FPV etc on youtube you start to wonder how much practice that sort of flying takes.

I've briefly flown acro on a DYS Elf and it wasn't a complete disaster (once I figured out I was in acro mode after initially doing a unintended forward roll trying to accelerate).

Get yourself some hours on a simulator.
Even Mattystuntz (top level quad guy) says one hour on the sim for him is worth 20 hours of real flying.

Thanks - I've bought 'Lift Off' which seems to have good recent reviews but don't have the controller yet to have a go.
Setting up the controller looks a bit daunting, seems like there will be a few hours of tinkering to get it working - After reading up on it I still have no idea what a PID actually is.

Practice low level manoeuvres line of sight at first (you need to see what the whole quad is doing when you manoeuvre)

Acro is actually pretty simple and not as scary as people think it may be. I avoided acro for ages flying horizon as I thought it was going to be a step change in complexity but it really isn't - Its the same really

Start with short point to point flights close in

Then move on to flying a square pattern and finally figured of 8

Then jump fully into FPV wink

lol ignore PIDs until you are better. Modern flight controllers default PIDs are way better than they used to be, so not so much need to tinker.
Setting up the controller is mainly just making sure the axis are centred and end points set up properly in the flight controller software.
There are plenty of decent walkthroughs showing how to do setup.

I'm loving it.
Got the QX95 on betaflight and working well with the Taranis - this took the best part of about 3 hours but I was having fun doing it.

Acro mode is great fun, so far I've rolls and back flips as well as a little proximity flying.

Unfortunately I've been enjoying it so much I've gone and ordered the parts for a 5" and some skyzone goggles - now I need to see what body parts I can sell off to pay for it.

Glad you're enjoying it, make the most of it while the evenings are light!

Whats everyone using as FPV goggles.

Thinking of buying an immersion vortex 150. Currently have a 2.4gh screen which is useless in daylight so need to upgrade but some of the goggle are far too expensive.

Anything recommendations for something good without breaking the bank?

I had some Eachine VR007's which were OK but lacking in features and quite bulky.
I've just started using some skyzone goggles: https://www.banggood.com/Skyzone-SKY02S-V-3D-5_8G-...
I didn't want to spend Fatshark money (although these are close - I got them on a sale) and the reviews seemed good for these - a lot of people seem to like the Aomway Commanders also which seem similar.
Eachine are about to release a budget goggle type soon which look like they could be worth looking into - they have a fan like the Fatsharks, I have noticed fogging up a couple of times on my skyzones and don't put them up on my forehead as that tends to result in foggyness.

- All from a novices perspective!

okay so being a complete novice why do I need head tracking with my vortex 150? I could be really daft here

You don't!
The features I was most interested in were the DVR, HDMI in and diversity (2 types of antenna working together).
