Duncan, what's the green matting around your layout?

looks like that garage floor or childrens soft foam tiles you can buy that are like a massive jigsaw.

Yes 10mm foam floor tiles. The colour isn't ideal but they are soft for the cars and don't shed fibres like the railway modellers grass does.

Thought it was ... do you remember where you got them?

I've been looking for some green ones but can't find them anywhere.

Bought this tiny little flea of a thing last night for my club's "Classic Le Mans" class - I know, this one doesn't even have lights, but it's allowed.

Spent the entire race evening terrified of the throttle. It's a sidewinder so wheelies hard if you punch it at the start, it's got a short (TINY) guide-to-axle distance (About 1.5cm shorter than the Slot.it GT40, so it corners well until it doesn't, it weighs almost nothing (I've got a big lump of lead in the front to just tame it for that night, I'm going to hotglue it in better, it's loose at the moment) and it's fragile as all hell (look at that mirror).

I like it though. It is a totally different animal to drive and I know when I can get my driving up to scratch it'll reward me heavily. As it is, I can't get it around the track much faster than an SCX DTM car at the moment tongue out
I'm getting deja vu here - amazing thread by the way!

Back in my very young days (probably around 1968-70) a neighbour of mine was heavily into slot cars / Scalextrix and gave me an Alfa T33 for my modest track. The car wasn't Scalextrix, but some weird home-cooked thing with a flat metal chassis (very light) which had the body pinned with 4 pins to hinged 'panniers' either side. The body itself was very thin clear plastic which was hand painted on the inside to give a good finish. It was classic Alfa red with the white nose. It had strange felt tyres and some sort of hot rod motor that made it travel at warp speed - usually into the skirting boards smile

He used to let me go with him to a place called 'Tottenham Raceways' in North London where they had a huge track, and much fun was had.

The cars that came with my track were an old lotus and a shark-nose Ferrari. Also had an Auto Union that my dad got from somewhere.

Sorry, just rambling now, but had to share that.

I believe the idea behind the General Grant it that they are rivals from a neighbouring county.
Do not think it was ever an actual car used in the tv series it's just a bit of fun from the people
at Pioneer.

Thanks for that Duncan, I'll get some ordered up.

Finally got the "Scalextric room" emptied so with any luck I'll have a track up for Christmas.
Off to Ikea over the weekend to get some cheap tables.

Sadly I only have room for a 3m x 1.5m layout, but I'm hoping that by running Digital (and Magless) along with either SSDC or RCS64 with full Pit control (Pit-Pro) it'll be big enough to stay entertaining.

Thanks for the memories. I used to travel up from Chertsey to Tottenham Court Road to visit Tottenham Model Raceway. Must have been about 13 or 14! My normal track was Richmond Vine but TCR was so big and fast I went as often as I could.
Chassis were made of brass with the side plates hinged to improve handling. The engine mounted at a shallow angle at the rear and the tyres were foam and make extra sticky with oil of wintergreen. As you say the body was vacuum formed plastic painted from the inside and often stunningly beautiful. Most cars were closed body 1/24 scale, it was difficult to squeeze everything into a 1/32 shell. my all time favourite was a Chapparal 2F complete with flipping wing! but my fastest car was a Lola.

You guys talking about memories reminded me of a large fixed slot car track on the high street in Hounslow, really strange location for such a facility.

Slot car racing was very big for a few years in the mid to late sixties. Many high streets had a model shop with a track on the premises. There were even magazines devoted to the hobby.

Anyone remember "Thingies"? They bore no relation to anything except a drag racer, wedge shaped bodies with giant foam tyres on the rear and a couple of pram wheels at the front. That and the ridiculous prices manufacturers start charging for performance parts helped kill the sport off as fast as it sprung up.

This would be the car I had (or very similar) - just googled and found this:

We've got the kids a scalextric arc one for Christmas.

Does anyone know if this will be compatible with classic track?

If not could someone point me in the direction of a converter section I will need. I have a couple of old sets in the garage which would be ideal to use to extend track.

I've googled my query but still none the wiser.

Thanks

The part you need is C8222:

Scalextric´s website says No Longer Available but I´m sure someone will have it, I bought one from my local retailer in the last year.
