Any ideas why a new car would only run about 20cm and then stop? Older cars are running fine on the track so issue is with the car.
Check the contact strips on the car. Pull them down a little at the back so they're not just folded flat against the guide. Is it stopping on the same or similar parts of the track?
Pleased to say my son loves his scalextric. He can't keep away from it.
I'm fairly impressed with the Arc One system. It's a great addition to the racing and helps stop any arguments. I can see me upgrading to the arc air at some point for the wireless controls.
The cars that came with the set were a bit fragile. Typically the Maclaren F1 car broke the first time it came off track. I've managed to get both new cars so they are less fragile which means more fun. I've also bought a Scalextric Aston Martin Probably performance which is great to experiment with. I might look into buying another or something similar if such a thing exists.
I've got a couple of old cars from my younger days that need fixing up. Which I'll do over the weekend.
Does anybody know if any manufacturer does a road going E46 M3?

Try some of the impact resistant cars. As the name suggests they can take some hammer and have less in the way of parts to fall off.
Not sure about E46 M3 road cars - plenty of race versions.

Does anyone know of a guide including parts list for adding led front and real lights.
I've searched but cant really find anything other than a few circuit diagrams.
If you find the part number of a car with the lights then you can search the Scalextric database for the service sheet which will have the parts list.I've searched but cant really find anything other than a few circuit diagrams.
There are a number of different light sub-assemblies for the various chassis.
Make sure you don't have a compatibility issue if you're using digital.

Here's the latest addition to my rather modest collection of modern Scalextric cars, courtesy of a superquick delivery over Christmas from Jadlam via Amazon:

Sorry for the cameraphone pictures.
I like that Mk2. I thought tobacco advertising was not allowed any more on replica models. Did you have to apply the Rothmans decals separately? And my Ford/classic-centric collection:

Happily not. Scalextric have taken a reality pill when it comes to classic, maybe slightly un-PC, liveries. On this box (and on a JPS Lotus 72) there is a sticker saying: "WARNING: This product features branding for tobacco and alcohol and may not be suitable for people under the age of 18".
