I wonder if thinned down acrylic varnish (water based stuff you'd get from b+q type places in a metal tin) would be a safer bet, airbrushed on in light coats, rather than a "hot" spray can.

Gutting to see though, I've been following this build for ages, clear coating models always scares me, to the point I have left some of my models un cleared if they have particularly complicated decal jobs, for example the Tamika Porsche 911 gt1, took me weeks to do that scheme!
I don't know. I usually do a test coat on some scrap model these days. The odd thing is, the trawler was sparayed in exactly the same way, and it was perfect. Then I use the same spray on a spare piece of hull, and that happens. In the past few months I've used Humbrol Matt on a Polikarpov, FW190 and Lavochkin La-7, all without issue. My son's FROG Macchi 202 was however a disaster, resulting in a similar frosted effect.

Next time I'll - as you suggest - use some matt through the airbrush. I have had problems with matt varnish through the airbrush in the past though.

I've been busy all week on my Wasp so I haven't popped in but that is the kind of thing that stopped me ever using any aerosol from Humbrol, sorry Matt but they are usel.. cra... rub...

pretty poor

I always use Tamiya's aerosols for matting models

and although its difficult I manage to just mist a coat on then walk away for half an hour

I hope you manage the repair, this has been a signature awkward and blooming lovely dr_gn build

I've loved it

Are you gracing Huddy on Sunday?

you know where to find me

I hope to get to Huddy, but bad weather is forecast. Shame because I wanted a couple of books.

I got some Winsor & Newton Galeria Matt and satin for next time, although somewhat ominously it says not to use on absorbent surfaces...

Don't worry I have nothing to do with Humbrol and agree with the sentiments!

So both sides were torn off, the edges cleaned up, and new sides cut:

This time I've opened up all the ports in the deck sides for mooring lines etc., something I meant to do last time, but forgot. i've also tried to get a better fit betweenthe lower hull and the base. Every cloud has a (very small) silver lining...

Well OK maybe not Huddy but I think you could be back on track for Cosford, how about it?

Silver lining or did something 'out there' make this happen, I wonder

wink

Hows the weather looking for Sunday now, round here its fairly OKish

Are you going to varnish the hull this time, or leave as is? I'd be tempted to not risk it

My OCD won't allow me to leave it in-varnished, however a trial last night with Galeria Matt did leave a residue st first which went after s subsequent coat. It'll be Russian roulette time, but I want to nail this one.

So it's done. Masked the base and windows ready for varnishing:

I tried the Galeria Matt on the stern, and when dry it had a slight (but very noticable) white residue. This time however I gave the entire model a coat of Klear, which eliminated this effect, and sprayed the Matt over that once dry. This solved the issue (as per my tests yesterday), and now it has a very nice uniform matt finish.

As I'd hoped, the rebuilt model is in fact better than the original in several ways: The hull sides had been on for about 12 months, so had got distorted, and they didn't fit to the base very well in the first place. The new sides are now smooth, and there is very little gap to the base. I also opened up all the mooring line holes and added doublers cut from the spare sides to represent the cast openings. This has given a much more realistic result in this area. Of course there are the joints between the old and new pieces, which on the whole are invisible unless you know where to look. Given the chance I would have rather not had to do this repair, but on the whole it turned out OK in the end.

I'll post some proper images when I get chance, but this is it now finished:

I really appreciate the positive comments and encouragment, especally after the total disaster last week!

Thanks very much guys!

The objective was always to enter this model in the IPMS Huddersfield show (held today), and I think without that tight deadline I probably wouldn't have bothered to correct it. I'm very glad I did, becasue it won best in class:
