So it's done. Masked the base and windows ready for varnishing:

I tried the Galeria Matt on the stern, and when dry it had a slight (but very noticable) white residue. This time however I gave the entire model a coat of Klear, which eliminated this effect, and sprayed the Matt over that once dry. This solved the issue (as per my tests yesterday), and now it has a very nice uniform matt finish.

As I'd hoped, the rebuilt model is in fact better than the original in several ways: The hull sides had been on for about 12 months, so had got distorted, and they didn't fit to the base very well in the first place. The new sides are now smooth, and there is very little gap to the base. I also opened up all the mooring line holes and added doublers cut from the spare sides to represent the cast openings. This has given a much more realistic result in this area. Of course there are the joints between the old and new pieces, which on the whole are invisible unless you know where to look. Given the chance I would have rather not had to do this repair, but on the whole it turned out OK in the end.

I'll post some proper images when I get chance, but this is it now finished:

I really appreciate the positive comments and encouragment, especally after the total disaster last week!

Thanks very much guys!

The objective was always to enter this model in the IPMS Huddersfield show (held today), and I think without that tight deadline I probably wouldn't have bothered to correct it. I'm very glad I did, becasue it won best in class:

Job done!

Much appreciated guys. I'll post some proper pictures on Friday, if the weather is good.

Ive got the HMV Flower Class Corvette in the stash next, but I need to clear a 1:48 Eduard Lysander and a 1:72 Macchi 202 first. I really should get on with the McLaren MP4/6 too. I have built a couple of other models this year, but becasue they were for a magazine, I'm not supposed to post them online until 6 months or so after publication (whenever that might be).

I've seen that HMV Bismarck built at the Telford Show, it's absolutely incredible.

International Paper Modelling Society? ;-)

Fantastic work, would love to see it in real life, Telford 2017?
Thanks! Yes, I did ask if it was OK to enter paper models, but there wasn't an issue.

I could take it to Telford if there was somewhere to leave it. I've never entered the conpetition there since I'm not an IPMS member (the Huddy show is an open comp), plus I've often thought the judging at Telford was pretty dodgy tbh.

Ahh yes fair enough, understand the issue. Agree on the judging front, how Spencer Pollards Harrier T2 didn't win last year I don't know. I've judged the Airfix competition there a couple of times and hate doing it so try to delegate these days!

Only joking with the paper comment, they really should change their name. I think it was 2 or 3 years ago when a stunning model of a rocket launch pad won the Telford comp, think it must have been about 95% etched brass...

Yeah I saw the rocket and tower - I think that was one of the more deserving winners. I think one year fairly recently, a model of a tin can won. Then there's the current obsession with the levitating racing cars (or whatever they are), which are undoubtedly beautifully and skilfully built, but which IMO have little relevance as true scale models since there is no prototype by which to judge them. There are loads of scratchbuilt models just as well built which are also painstakingly researched since they are of real subjects. It's all a bit weird.

Bought a couple of custom made cases for my paper ships (I think they would be difficult to dust):

I've bought a few cases over the years, but these are the best quality so far.
