The laws regarding how or whether tobacco logos are shown on model cars vary from country to country. I bought quite a few 1/43 models in the 1990s and the rules seemed to be, as far as the UK was concerned -

modern cars - no ciggie logos on factory assembled models
modern cars - no ciggie logos on decals if a kit
historic cars such as the 1972 JPS or the 1968 Lotus 49 - ciggie logos allowed on factory assembled models
after market decal sheets - ciggie logos allowed

Cheeky bds.

How did you locate the photo with the bar code in place?

I will be replying to Panini asking them the exact same question.

Just type "Ayrton Senna 1988 McLaren" into a Google image search. It's one of the first images there.

Found it. Thank you.

The photo looks as though it was taken at the 1988 British Grand Prix on either Frday or Saturday because race day was quite wet.

I have emailed Panini asking why they have used a photo-shopped image as a 'reference' for what they claim is authentic livery when, clearly, it isn't.

Had a look at model no 2 this morning. It is a very dark shade of red - it is almost ruby red which I don't think is correct.

Don't think I will be buying anymore of them.

Laudas ferrari 312t2. I'd forgotten all about these following the comments on the mp4 but my daughter brought me home the 312 this afternoon. I think it's not to bad TBA, certainly better than the comments on the mp4 led me to believe. Yes, the minichamps are much better but then the price is much higher.

Lord above guys its a 1/43 die cast Mclaren car for less than a pint of lager. I'm very happy with mine, I don't intend on collecting all of them as I'll be concentrating on the 80's and 90's cars but Ive seen a lot worse in this scale.

so they dont have tobacco liveries, it's a shame but it's life unfortunately. Yes they are delicate and neant to be stored in their display cases at all times, not pushed around the living room floor making vroom vroom noises (as tempting as that may be).

I'm now looking forward to the FW-14b admittedly minus the Camel logos.

Have you read the thread?

The main issue is not what it is, it's what Panini claim it is.

ETA £7 for a pint of lager is horrible. I assume you're in Norway or somewhere similar.

Saw the MP4/4 today in Smiths. You know what, it's not garbage at all, I take that comment back.

Yes, the paint is atrocious, the decals are wrong, and the detail in the cockpit is...sparse, but I'll be getting a couple tomorrow for 5.98.

I'll strip them, repaint them with automotive RAL3024 when I next work on my MP4/6 project (correctly on the nose this time so a standard logo will fit) and have myself a nice Prost and Senna pair in small scale to go with my Tamiya/Top Studio 1:20 versions. Should look great for less than £20 all-in.

I might have a look out for them in that case. How much will future editions cost?

Nice plan, despite the markings and paint underneath there's a pretty decent die cast model there. Also if you unscrew the car from the base and reposition the spacer to underneath the base the car no longer hovers above the track surface smile

I've got a block of polished carbon fibre to put them on, should look great.

Do the mirrors and antennae come off easily? Slight reservation about repainting the rear wing, but should be OK.

No. The others are not £2.99.

I was a bit sceptical as to whether I'd be able to get it apart and back together without damaging those smaller parts.

For a minute there I thought you were being sarcastic!
While the McLaren looked ok for what it is, last week I saw the Lauda Ferrari in Tesco's and they have got the wing mirrors totally wrong in their proportions to the rest of the car, even down to the angle of them relative to the bodywork. Shame as I might have bought it had it looked better. Of course being a 70's Ferrari you dont have to worry about missing tobacco decals.
I look forward to your deconstruction/rebuild thread dr_gn!

As an aside, I'm looking forward to seeing what the Good Dr and Skii can make of the base model with a bit of their time and skill on the case.

One of my antennae broke off without any persuasion the moment I touched it redface , they appear to be cemented into very shallow holes behind the roll bar, simple to reattach with a dab of CA.

For scale purposes probably better to replace with some wire or stretched sprue.

Not sure about the mirrors.

Re: the carbon fibre, My Tamiya Mp4-5B is mounted on a sheet of Carbon Fibre. Neil Burkill from Paragon Designs was kind enough to supply me with an offcut that *just* managed to fit into my display case!

It does make a really nice base if you can get hold of the stuff.

Always great to see a model like that ^^

So, here's the Punani MP4/4 in all its...glory:

And after about 20 mins, stripped (apart from the seat, which is firmly stuck in place):

It's pretty much as expected, half decent die casting, half decent wheels and tyres, plastic's a bit crap & fragile. I think the headrest should only be on a Prost version from what I remember of building the Tamiya version, but let's not go mad.

I wouldn't want to pay £600 for the full set (obviously I'm not a true enthusiast), but £2.99 for this one is fine. Now where's that Mr.Muscle?

and he's off biggrin

Here's a thought - you can omit the snorkels on the sidepods and do the post Silverstone car, they spoil the lines of the car anyway wink
