Right - copying a few more WIP's from other forum to here, for consistent tips 
Another MIF kit - the iconic Williams FW16.
I'm a Senna fan, so this is a must (for the wrong reasons perhaps)
I got this kit when it was released as I didn't want to miss out - as with the others, I order direct from MFH.
Loads of parts as you would expect - all of them lovely...
Note the pen for scale!
The white metal is quite soft - lots of reshaping required when I get to them...(grrr - MFH packaging!)
Resin parts....
Very nice turned wheels, and rubber tyres, thankfully with the logos already applied!
Rubber 'boots' for electrical connectors...
Lots of rivets, cables, turned ali parts etc etc
I'm going to start with the engine, and assembling the vehicle as a 'test' build, just to make sure everything fits....
I've purchased a source book, and collected lots of pictures from the web, to refer to...to be honest, in terms of reference pictures for the techie stuff, it is not as good as other MFH books...I'm talking nitty gritty detail shots of things like pipes, brakes etc...you can find more on the web. In contrast, the one they do for the MP4/4 is much better...
So - starting with the engine block, as it is a nice 'sub-assembly' I can work on and add detail too...
I am using a dremel type drill with a brass wire wheel on it to give the metal a basic clean - works great for the engine where I don't need a mirror finish!
Did some more very rough test fitting last night - just to see []
Nothing fixed in place...

As with most kit manufacturers, the decals supplied are 'PC' - with 'Racing' used instead of 'Rothmans'
...but they are beautiful.

Now - the next bit was entirely by chance (it really was - I had no idea...) - fill in the gaps!!
I am using 'a' box that 'a' kit came in to store, and I took out the main internal cardboard box that this particular kit had some resin parts in - it was actually taped down.
Stuck on the underside was a brown envelope...
Later, i found a 'similar' envelope and looked inside...
...but they are beautiful.

I went over the block and gearbox and tried to drill out all the holes I thought I would need, then primed. I love the way that primer brings out all of the details.
(I first used metal etch primer on the metal parts, and I washed the resin parts with some degreaser)

Right - back on this for a bit now I have just about finished the 917K engine phase. Bit of a change.

Looks class. Well worth the money just to get everything in one box. I've just ordered another load of rivets and stud nuts from RBM and Hiroboy for the MP4/6, and I'm still not sure I'm done. Total PITA trying to figure out what's needed.
The carbon on the decals looks a bit sudden, or it it just the lighting?

Doing the same with that MP4/6 and I am sure I have spent the same as an MFH kit!
Probably the close up photo, but also I think that the carbon is 'clear' so it relies on the color below coming through, which will tone it down a bit.
I'll be trying first piece soon as I do the inserts in the cam covers...

I decided to go with Alclad Aluminium - I feel that the Alclad has much less of the silver 'speckles' you find in 'normal' silver paint. Black gloss base not required as this is not a super-shiny finish, like Chrome for example.

None of the detail under the airbox will be seen - obviously!
At this point I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed in the engine. It looked a bit....toy like. It wasn't coming together so quickly as the 917k did.
Maybe it is because these engines are so 'clean' - all the cables and pipes are hidden!
Cables and wires are added later in the build after joining the gearbox etc.
However, for some reason, once I added the first decal - the 'Renault F1' on the cam cover, I think it suddenly became more real - maybe it was just the better photography....

...I chose a medium grey for under the decals, and now I have applied them, I think the carbon looks much better than when it is on the sheet. Close up photography doesn't help!The carbon on the decals looks a bit sudden, or it it just the lighting?

If you added the induction system, gearbox and cooling system to the Renault engine, the difference wouldn't be as great, plus there's an extra 1000cc or so of capacity in the Porsche's favour.dr_gn said:
