Ordered my Caterham yesterday with the GB10 offer and I redeemed some VIP points. With the free London bus which I will give to my daughter it made it not too expensive. Well that's what I'm saying to myself.

I love this to bits. Other than one thing: the front track is too narrow. Most obvious when looking at it head on, but the Superlight R and similar Caterhams with wide track have exactly the same track width front and rear.

Ended up pretty cheap with the discount code and bus. With the bus sold the total was £40! Just sold the little train that came free with my Mini last Christmas as well, another £20!

I'll be getting one shortly..... next on the list is the new Death Star and a wood burning stove for the living room(!!), so this'll probably be an Xmas purchase.

I think it looks good, given the limitations of Lego. I certainly think it's a better resolved set than the recent Beetle and F40, which to me are both oddly proportioned.

The price doesn't upset me.... you have to consider that every set will carry royalty payouts to Caterham and the chap who designed it, so I think it's an acceptable price-point for a very unique model.

There will undoubtedly be a licence fee payable to Caterham - but then that was true of the F40 (I imagine - Ferrari are usually very quick to get their pound of flesh!) and it had a substantially higher piece count than the 620R but at a similar (same?) price point.

I doubt the designer is getting any major cut either. There was a documentary on C4 relatively recently about Lego and there was an interview with the guy who had come up with the Birds set that made it into the Lego Ideas range. He made a comment about getting a small amount for each set sold.

That said, I built 2 of the 3 bags last night and I enjoyed it. It will be a nice display model once finished, and I suspect it will be a limited run. It does still rankle slightly though that the piece count is so out of kilter with other Creator sets when the price is the same.

I (foolishly) jumped in and paid the full price the second it went online but did enjoy the build and it makes an excellent display piece. Some clever techniques employed too.

Really enjoyed the build. There are some great building techniques used and the use of parts is very interesting. I love the use of the lipstick pieces in the exhaust.

I also paid full price (meh) and it took no more than 3 hours to build and the dash wobbliness and front nosecone falloffiness aren't great but I LOVE this model(!!!). It's my favourite one so far (f40, mini and this - haven't done the beetle yet).
[b/]But anyway... does anyone know if the royal blue pieces of the third of the original press cars are actually available and how much it might cost? I really want to build a blue one (or maybe all black Vader spec one!).[\b]
Slight wobbliness aside I really love this!
Otherwise - any ideas on what part to use for 4 trumpets / velocity stacks for the engine (!)?
(I used 4 'loud hailers' for my 16v conversion on the mini (!))
By the way for the avoidance of doubt .. I love this model! It's £70 but hey that's a 'tasting menu' somewhere so whatever. It didn't take anywhere as long to do per £ as the Porsche but i found it weirdly more satisfying in the end. I love things like the white head header tank - the whole thing just shines "this was done by a 'petrolhead'. And some hilarious repurposing of lipsticks, whips and guns!
Verdict:winner!

Better then the F40 eh? So far the €85 pricetag is scaring my away...but i might just have to bite the bullet on that one.

Awesome idea to do an all black Vader spec one by the way, i did my own vader spec Eta-2, which was a very cool thing to do.

Definitely better than the f40. The way the roof is done on the f40 is genius as are a few other things but it looks more like a fiero with a fibre glass bodykit... whereas this does look like a caterham! As my cousin said when doing his.. I vet the tyre poke would fail the SVA..! ;-)

Got fed up on my enforced 2 weeks off work, so I built a black version..... I might build a dk green version too but it will have to have black arches/mud guards as they don't do those in Green

shep,
where did you source the black parts from? I have bought the standard yellow boxed model, but would love to build one in white to match the real one in the garage...

Brickowl. Cost just under £50 for all the parts, most are cheap but the 14 arches & the 10 curved bits on the bonnet came to just over £22 on their own! Not sure if all the parts are available in White.

I'm confused, (or doing it wrong!) we have the Beetle, and would love to build it again In a different colour.
I've put the set number into Brink Owl and it comes back saying the full kit would be hundreds of pounds, the same for the Caterham!
How did you get all the bits for a 2nd one so cheap?

Copy the parts list page from the back of the manual. enter the individual part number for the bit you want in the alternative colour - It will show in the colour in the book for the model that Lego produced. Click 'alternative colour options' & pick the colour you want. Then pick your shop that has the quantity you want. Most suppliers have multiple parts so when you are on their page just enter the parts number in the 'finder' at the top of the page and it searches their shop rather than the whole database. Using the Wish list search is always mega expensive, a lot of it is postal charges as it picks parts from the cheapest sellers and ignores postage prices. Places like Em's bits n' pieces, Minifig4life or Cora's creations are good shops to use they have many of the pieces you will need.

Ah, that makes perfect sense, thanks.
I didn't realise it sourced the bits from separate sellers.
So basically, just find shops that have the largest number of things you want and build it up in batches from different places.
This could be fun smile

Yes, start with the shops I mentioned (I used them for the bulk of the bits) it saves the bits in your cart(s) so you don't have to do it all in one go.

PS - the VW is expensive to build in alternative colours, some of the bits are rare and cost an arm & a leg. The F40 & the Caterham are about £50 each in bits inc postage.

I believe the wheel arch pieces were launched with that model.
