Looking to travel to the US later in the year to stay with a friend near Chicago.
What's the collectives opinion on the best budget flight website(s)?
There are now a myriad available, and I am pretty sure that they all trawl that same databases, but just in case, Ill ask the question....

Be a bit careful with any of them, companies with the cheapest flights might not be reliable or reputable. What I tend to do is use SkyScanner and then go to the airlines website to book direct.

As Condi says, book direct with the airline.

There is no cheap airfare fairy!

I haven't ever booked on these sites but I think it's convinient for pople who can be ok when they are told that their flight has been delayed for 3 days))) My friends had to spend 3 days in Poland waiting for their flight, but they enjoyed it! If you are ready for such situations, book there!

Are you suggesting that Kayak and Sky scanner are dubious bucket shop sites? Strange.

As far as I know, they are perfect toy respectable aggregate sites.

I thought Skyscanner and Kayak took you to the airline's site to book anyway?

Skyscanner takes you to third party sites generally.

They're not dubious, no, but some of the companies they search might be. For example say... Luton to Geneva, some company called 'Go Flight' might show as the cheapest, rather than Easyjet direct. 'Go Flight' might not be reputable, and its them you're booking with, not skyscanner or Easyjet, so any issues both the airline and skyscanner wash their hands.

There are some good ones on skyscanner such as ebookers and Expedia.

Just check the prices and book with one of those two if they are cheaper otherwise airline direct.

Also check out Google flights, you can search allot of data very quickly

BravoFly is one of the ones I'd avoid. A couple of years ago booked with Philippine airlines through these lot and they left us high and dry in Manilla. Just an email to say our flight was cancelled and our money would be refunded in 20-28 days. called them and they weren't interested, told us we should book new flights.

Skyscanner is generally good though, use it quite often.

I find it's better to check the airline websites direct. Might take a bit longer but it's worth the effort. I don't now bother with these other intermediaries.

Just use google flights not gives you Callander pricing so you can adjust your trip by a day or two. You can exclude certain airlines and it takes you direct to the third party to book

Sky scanner just redirects you to the airline website once you've chosen suitable flights

Skyscanner is useful as it offers options of going out with one airline and coming back with another, to get better flying times.
