Looking for a bit of feedback on my 2010 Carrera and a potential problem, We are all told to worry about overheating but what about underheating!!

Had the car since the summer and it has always taken ages to warm up. In traffic oil doesn't start to register for at least 20 mins. Normally When doing my daily drive (motorway steady 70 mph oil sits around 70 and water around 70 too. In london traffic oil goes to 90 and temp to 80 so I know the gauges are working

During the current cold spell my oil temp is struggling to even register. After a 30 min steady 65mph (revs about 2000, temp outside 4 Deg C) the oil temp gauge was still not even registering and it would not let me do oil level test. I idled for a minute and the gauge finally moved above 60. The cabin never really got warm either and water temp was around 60. Oil pressure etc seemed fine

Questions - Do i have a problem or is this a function of cold ambient temps and a lazy cruise around M25?

Given that the gauges all seem to work, I am thinking the thermostat is stuck open and my car is being a little too efficient of getting rid of the heat

Any other suggestions?

I think you almost certainly have a problem. My GTS doesn't often go out in low temp conditions but took it for a run over Christmas on a low salt day (but still 4-5 degrees). I always see close to 90 degrees on the gauge and have no problem at all with warming the cabin at a 70 MPH motorway cruise so am sure you have a stuck thermostat.

Need to get if fixed ASAP to avoid unnecessary engine wear

I should add that i am talking oil temp as i don't pay a lot of attention to water temps when warming up a car.

What oil is in there and when was it last changed? My GTS used to take a worryingly long time to reach temp when I first bought it in Dec '13. I got an oil change done in May '14 and was significantly improved. Could have been the outside temperature being higher of course, but noticed in Winter '14 it was still a lot quicker to get to temp.

Likely to be the thermostat.

In steady driving in the highest gear, slight throttle setting, there just isn't enough heat being generated, and ambient cool air will dissipate what heat there is.

I suspect that if you drive it at, say, 70 in third for a few minutes, the temp will rise. Change to top gear, the temp will slowly drop again. If you then crawl in traffic the temp might climb again due to low airflow.

That's cheap diagnostics.

You just described my trip home. The cooling is obviously marginal. On the M25 at 65mph (4 deg c) it cools and and the oil temp drops just of the gauge. On the M3 and and few miles an hour faster and the oil temp starts to climb. Once I hit london and traffic then every thing starts to look normal and the cabin also warms up

In some respects I am glad to know how well cooled the car is. Im 48 and remember the bad old days where all cars overheated eventually

got the car at a specialist on thursday.

PS

Bought car 6 months ago with full serivce, oil change etc from Dove House so I am comfortable the oil is good

took it to independent. Stuck it on the code reader. Low and behold "thermostat stuck open"
