R/C model tank help required

I have a very cool R/C M1 Abrams which has fully controllable tracks, turret, gun elevation and even fires ball bearings. Well, it used to. I haven't used it for a while, stored it in its original box with the batteries taken out. Tried to play recently, now just doesn't work.

The batteries I put in are all brand new, but I tested them and tried some others just for good measure and still nothing.

I don't know much about these things (it's the only R/C model I've ever owned) so some pointers of what to look at/for next would be much appreciated.

Stupid question, perhaps, but have you changed the batteries in the RC uit as well as the Abrams, or are they all re-chargeable ?
