Hi Chaps,

After my return to modelling with a disasterous choice of model kit (escort mk1 airfix)and having had a good look around and taking on board advice given here, I have bought a 1/32 spitfire kit and am trying to find some Photo based pictures of a Griffon 61 engine so I can detail some of the bare parts.

I have looked at most of the sites and can't find anything suitable, perhaps I am being daft, but any help would be appreciated.
thanks Dave.

That'll presumably be the Revell (Matchbox) 1/32 Spitfire Mk22/24 ? If so, beware the wing-fuselage fillet joints: It might pay you to assemble the top wing skins to the fuselage first!

ETA These are all I've got:

yes You must be 'knowledgeable' on the subject to know that from an engine request!

It's a nice model, but it's old, and it ain't Tamiya. It will probably go together better than the Airfix Cortina, but as I said, take care with the wing joints.

Good night and good luck!

Thank you for the heads up on the wing joints and the posting of pictures they will help no end. If I can achieve 1% of the standard you have set then I will be a very very happy chap.

Being aware of the age of kits and their respective moulds is a key to knowing what to expect in a build.

I love all these old classic kits - but am generally aware of what to expect when I start putting them together.

Brilliant pictures dr

I just googled on an offchance

"images"

"griffon engine"

and there are dozens of decent pictures to draw from

They aren't all good ones but there are several I would use if I was Griffon-ning any day soon

On mine I didn't bother with engine detail, mainly because it was a rebuild and the rest of the model wasn't very well built, but also becasue the removable engine covers are a pretty poor fit and have huge gaps all around them when fitted. spoils the lines of the model IMO.

Not wanting to discourage you from detailling the engine, but it might end up being more bother than it's worth...especially if you want to display it 'in flight'. You could get a few more kits under your belt and then go for a Tamiya 1:32 Spitfire which comes with superb internal details and wafer thin magnetic engine covers as standard...at a price.

Took them at Duxford a few years back Perdu. Should have taken more I guess!

Now...you're looking for a project aren't you? How about a Spitfire 22 production line in 1:32? Say 10 airframes from bare airframe to finished thumbup

'ere you! Behave...

I am seriously considering having a bash (oops and oww!) at the Airfix Cranberry I already have along with the conversion doohdah

Or one of the pair of CH46s I found in a box together (green poly and grey poly, someone might know the significance) I built one with all the blades folded and a scratch built cockpit once in the then current olive green and all black markings... maybe

Or the Bearcat

Or the Airfix Frogeye, maybe converted to MG Midget to match my own

But in all honesty I fear my faded eyeballs may foil me

I do still have a bagged Airfix P1127 that might come in handy or Frog's Venom

Any way suffice it to say I will be having a knock soon

I think I mentioned I got one of these as a present recently:

Will be nice to do a nice pristine colour scheme for a change!

Nice to hear you'll be back. Christmas start perhaps?

Stupid thing is

Still no Swann Morton blades

I'll pop round to Mike's Models and see if he still sells 'em

One of the drawbacks is a lack of the tools I ued to have in their sacrosanct boxes, now dispersed "all over the shop" as my dad used to put it.

Soon anyway, before my eyeballs bung up completely..

Now, 'nuff about me has the OP got enough detail now to carry on

and can we watch as you go yes

Thanks for the tips and inspiration chaps!

I have started the beasty already and spent 9 hours on section 1 already, this is going to be no where near what you guys can produce, have to say Dr your 109 is awesome!

If I get five minutes tomorrow I will post some pictures and await the feedback good or bad welcome.

Incidently minime has taken the airfix escort off me, and is doing it on the weekends he is here, its the quietest I've seen him in years!!!

Thanks again Dave.

Swann Morton blades are easily available and you don't need a modelling supplies outlet. I bought some recently for my work and googled the details. If you really get stuck I'll dig out the receipt and let you know suppliers contact info.

Great looking at the various projects such as the Bf 109. Don't have the spare time now that I run my own business. Come home and collapse in a big heap but still have enough energy to use a keyboard!

You can get SM blades and handles at Hobbycraft if you have one close by. (also sell kits, paints etc.

Not sure if this is a 61, but it is on display at the Midland Air Museum

Now we're getting a story!

Great start (no gluey fingerprints...don't ask!) wink

BTW

I know getting Swann Morton no 2s, my favourite, won't be hard I'm just making excuses I think smile

Must get a few scalpel blades too, became quite happy with them for certain jobs. I found one of my six inch steel rules this evening, hoping to find my one with 72 points to the inch too.
Has to be somewhere but not finding it won't stop me getting a start on.

You don't know how close that came for me! especially as minime tipped his red enamel paint on the sofa as I was gluing the engine halves up....

Will post more later in week.

Nice start.

Just as a pointer, you might want to invest in a mirco drill set 0.3-3mm and a pin vise and drill out the ends of the exhaust stubs.
