At first I tried to make it by coiling lead wire around a brass rod former, then replacing the brass rod with lead wire so that it could be bent into curves:

This was before figuring out that guitar string is much better, and pre-coiled. The h.p. fuel lines and oil pipes at the back of this engine are guitar string:

ETA For a more angled, braided look, you could try bike brake or gear (bowden) cable.

was hopefully wanting to find something like this, ive found a U.S ebay seller so ive asked if they'l send here

thanks for the other tips , it wont be 100% accurate to the screen car , but some real wires/cable will look better than a poke in the eye lol

oh and any idea on the sizings for guitar strings ? seem a few that might suit but have no idea on the dia , also does it bend easy ? kinda imagine its super stiff

The stuff I used was 0.9mm, 1.1mm & 1.6mm diameter. It bends easily by hand, but for sharp corners use pliers. I always drilled holes and pushed the ends of the wire into them to make a secure joint. You should be able to bend to the correct shape before securing with super glue or Klear.

With plain lead wire, there is no spring in it, so you just 'drape' the wires around whatever shape you need, then Klear them into place. I used masking tape and tin foil cut into thin strips for cable clips. After everything is in place and sealed with Klear, use a MIG dark wash to bring out all the depth and detail.

ETA, For that type of braid in your photo (rather than spiral wound), how about this guy:

It almost looks like one of those cheap silver necklaces you can get in Argos (errr, someone told me), rahter than braid.

Wasn't saying it was a bad thing - in fact I might have a look at getting some cheap jewellry to cut up in future! It looks quite effective.

right the ebay stuff arrived (ordered friday , here tues ) its real braid with a wire inside so you can bend it , its a bit fake tin foil bright looking but some wash will sort that

the bigger stuff he lists is pukka braid like used on cars so no worrys there , prob a bit fat for what i wanted
