What sort of stuff do you build Zaxxon?
Like Eric I'm into 1/72 aircraft but am nowhere near as skilled as Eric, dr_gn or Shar2 (to name but three).
It's more a random series of experiments with me rather than any particular skill. Like Eric I'm into 1/72 aircraft but am nowhere near as skilled as Eric, dr_gn or Shar2 (to name but three).
I'm not really into competitions; I find that on B.M., plenty of people enter, and some really great models get 0 votes, which must be pretty demoralising.
I would suggest setting a kit price limit - say £15 (if any PHer selling models wanted to do a group buy, at a discount then this, would be the price that he would sell the kits at, otherwise it would be typical retail price). And after each round - say 2 months, then the winner, not only judges the next round but selects the next model. This would enable a wide variety of kits (and genres) to be used and challenge modellers to build kits not in their usual field. This is how the photography - Monthly Competition - on PH works.
Two stickied threads would then run, one with the completed entrants and one with any build progress, etc.
This would require a judge and model setter for the first competition, which could be one of the usual 'expert' modellers or the original OP to set the ball rolling. No reason why the judge can't build a model as well, he just won't be able to award his model victory!

As a returner to Kitbuilding through my son's Warhammer! I would say that a 1/32 plane is too large and too costly for the first build off. It's also very daunting for modellers with lesser skillsets. I would vote for something smaller (and cheaper, sorry cost effective!)

I was only joking - I just bought a 1/32 SE5a.davidy
How about the Revell 1:144 range of single seaters ?

Why not just use a secret ballot method (by e-mailing a selected impartial person)? Then it's more impartial, and nobody would know how many votes they got. Could even restrict the voting to the entrants only. Two stickied threads would then run, one with the completed entrants and one with any build progress, etc.

This is a good idea.
I generally model in 1/48 so that would be my preference, although a democratically selected 1/72 or other would be fine.
Here are some 1/48 examples under £15
Mirage III

Mig 21

Hawk

Spitfire XVI

Apache Longbow

Sea Harrier

There are other high quality stores as well as Emodels, I'm just used to their website.
Regarding scoring, we could employ a Eurovision style method whereby everybody scores all the models other than their own.

Too rigid set of rules already. Since I don't build anything smaller than 1/48 aircraft, 1/35 military vehiclesTwo stickied threads would then run, one with the completed entrants and one with any build progress, etc.

or 1/350 ships I would find it a struggle build a kit I liked at that price. Also having rather a large stash of kits I wouldn't really want to buy anything new.

I agree that with each build off, it may be a kit that you don't like but thats part of the point. It would broaden modelling horizons and be a bit of fun. If we stick to aircraft or tanks, then some of lesser modellers will feel daunted by some of the skills already displayed on this forum, but open it up to fantasy/sci-fi kits, cars, bikes, lunar probes, etc then we may feel less 'impotent'!
Anyway my suggestions, were just suggestions.... Have no real thoughts on the voting system, it's jus that we will need someone to set the ball rolling with a suggested kit and timeframe.

We could always vote someone off every Friday evening, and then humiliate them by forcing them to put their partially complete model in a blender. Then the final three could be judged by all the previous losers, the overall winner getting a years' membership of the Airfix modelllers club, second place gets 2 years' membership, and so on.I agree that with each build off, it may be a kit that you don't like but thats part of the point. I see your point David. But it wouldn't matter what the subject matter, the skills would still be there as they are honed over many years of modelling. I look at some of the builds on modelling websites and it makes me feel like beginner, and I've been doing it on and off for nearly 40 years.I agree that with each build off, it may be a kit that you don't like but thats part of the point.
