Maybe forget the competition for the first couple of goes.
As there will be a big difference in skills. DR_gn that ME109 that you linked to is stunning and shows a very high attention to detail and skill.
Perhaps we should keep it simple so the person who is voted for as having done the best effort (not necesarrily best model) can choose the next subject.

Or, how about combining both your ideas and have a competition for the "best effort" on a set model - considering experience, materials used and painting method? Seems to me to be an excellent compromise. That way anyone could use any amount of aftermarket stuff or airbrushing and it would still be a level playing field. I would be up for that arrangement.
Cool ok we'll go for that as DR_GN posted above.
This model?

Although it was one of my nominations, I reckon now we've gone this far, we should put everyone's nominations to the vote. This model?

I recently built the Revell Me 109G, IMO, not the greatest kit. The wheels didn't work very well for me.
The Hurricane however is an excellent model, the Tempest is also pretty nice, although my invasion stripes aren't very straight when you look at it closely,
Maybe it'd be good to try and get a model that no one, or at least, very few people have built?

So quite authentic. For D-Day They were applied in great haste, sometimes using brooms.(Having just looked this up I see Typhoons and some Tempests had them painted on at the factory so they were probably quite neat.)
Interesting news in IPMS Germany website is that Revell will be issuing a "new tool" 1/72 Halifax in 2011. This would be great if true. A couple of years ago they released the old Matchbox Halifax which, whilst welcome, has serious shape issues with its cocpit canopy.
Not suggesting it for the build off - but I was having a go at Revell a few posts ago for not producing that many British WW2 subjects. Maybe they are now looking at this area for new releases - I bet their new Lancaster has sold well.

So I shouldn't buy La-5 yet?

Ironically, Airfix's Halifax, which is a much older mould and VERY hard to turn into a decent model, got the windscreen shape correct.
