So have I got the rules right?
Get yourself a 1:72 kit of any Hawker Tempest, build & paint as you like between specified dates, post piccies. JD
That just about sums it up nicely - create yourself a build thread as well to post your pics on.
Right, I'm in. Mine's ordered, collecting an Airfix one tomorrow. Need to get a camera tho. smile

My Academy kit has just arrived and have to say it looks brilliant. Looking forward to starting it now.

Just found an Airfix Tempest in the stash along with a Airwaves etch set, thought I'd sold it. Will still probably do the Special Hobby MkII just to be different.

Right, first question.

Colours.

I've got the academy kit, I'll be building JF-E No.3 Sqn.

Dark Green
Ocean Grey
Medium Sea Grey

are the colours the instructions give. As I'm sure you all know, none of the colours between manufacturers match (apart from black and white, biggrin ).

So, first of all, Matt or Satin? The pictures look like Satin.
I'm thinking :
Humbrol 165 Medium Sea Grey Satin for the underside

Then possibly 163 Dark Green Satin, although it looks like it might be a bit too dark.
And the Humbrol Ocean Grey is matt. So maybe 129 or 156.

Never seem to get the colours perfect.

This is how I painted my Revell Tempest

Fot Tamiya the colours are Dark Green XF-61, Ocean Grey XF-54, Medium Sea Grey XF-53

http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorcharts/stuff_eng...

Be careful with this chart though - I think they greys on some schemes might be mixed up, ie the lighter one is listed as a top surface colour. The shades are right though, just use the Dark Green and the Darker of the Greys on the top surface, and the Lighter of the greys on the undersides. I used Tamia on the Spitfire and it looks OK.

ETA

IMHO at this scale, a matt finish looks best. I'll be using Xtracolour XDFF Matt Varnish. Very Very matt!

I'm quite looking forward to this. I have discovered an old school modeller's shop less that half a mile from me.
The guy has only been there a year, but has been in the game for decades, and he's signed a 12 year shop lease!
It's a proper floor to ceiling Aladdin's cave. He's got everything you can imagine from working trains the size of a pack of Wrigleys (is that treble o?) to s/h 60's Airfix kits of ships at 50p!

Except of course, a 1:72 Tempest, irked which I have had to source elsewhere. I shall be using him for paints, brushes, glues etc for this build though.
This build? What am I saying?? The last kit I attempted was maybe 1979 and I've far more important things I should be doing! Why did he have to go and sign such a long lease... smash

I'd be interested to know who voted for which kit *out of the people who actually complete this GB*.

I propose that only people who complete this GB are eligible for voting for the model in the next one (assuming there is a next one). Why should we be building models chosen (in part) by people who aren't participating?

I found everything arse backwards. I put my name down in the GB Wiki, then found the closed poll thread.

Will there be a final thread where the we in the audience, as it were, can vote on the best finished model?

It was going to be a vote for "best effort" (based on experience, tools available and money spent on aftermarket parts etc) rahter than "best model". That seemed a fairer way of 'judging' a model from different manufacturers and differening levels of experience of modellers.

I voted for the Lavochkin and I don't want to build a Tempest - surely only letting people vote who build the most popular choice will result in group builds of diminishing returns until there's only one voter left building whatever he likes??

Why? There'd be no restriction on participation, just voting. The people who entered the next GB (including any extra people who fancied building whatever kit was chosen) would be eligible to vote for the third GB and so on.

I don't want to build the tempest but the group voted for it so thats what I'll build if I want to participate in the PH group build. And also be able to vote in the next round.

You may like the next rounds model, in that case you may build it and get a vote for the round after that.

It's only a £5.00 model, it won't break the bank.
