I guess that'll be in then. First time in quite a while for something that has wings that lift rather than push, so we'll see how it goes.

Livery wise, possibly Goering's Tempest. Modifications, might do a littl something with the cockpit, but probably not much else. Will also probably be posed gear up rather than gear down.

Quick bit of work on the control panel artwork;

The right hand side is based on the Academy panel and the left hand side os a more accurate (?) but still simplified example based on a few images found online. Instruments are actually German, so I guess that sets the livery as well (although their position is a pure guess). The red and green blocks are just there to remind me to put something in there or black/silver them out.

Plan is to make a new panel from clear plastic, print these decals and lay ontop and then try and light the dials with fiber. Probably pretty pointless, but never mind. Silver layer is just there to break up the panel a bit to be honest.

Jeez, I wondered about doing something a little different but fair play to you for attenpting to light the cockpit instruments!
scratchchin Just out of interest, are there affordable fibre optic kits readily available? I was wondering about the external aircraft lighting...

RF:

Is there any chance you could print me a few decals of those instruments on decal film to use on the Resin Art panel? I'll measure the main diameters so you can scale them?

I was about to PM you re. this anyway, plus some markings for the bombs and tractor. Any chance you could do these too if I sketch something out? The Tractor has an RAF roundel and a yellow disc, plus some lettering, and the bombs have yellow stencilling plus some red and yellow rings:

And how about a stencil set for the GB ?

http://www.hawkertempest.se/Stencils.htm

Could you PM me with a few prices?

Cheers!

Stencils, not sure it includes bombs tho. Trying to find them again..

Not that clear from the piccy, but I think there are stencils included with the markings.
They are very small, which you would expect, and I cannot think what else they might be.

Oh that is amazing

Mac Kennaugh was a good friend of we IPMS Birmingham modellers

US-H was his most usual steed and I think it had his wife's name painted on the nose, one of them did. I think it was "Thelma"

Suppose now I am going to have to get those decals and make a Tempest in memory of a great bloke

Not during the GB though, I've enough on for now

Indeed if you read the additional sheet. He never made his full kill claims. A very modest man it would seem.

I was thinking of doing US-H.

Thanks for the link. I'll see how it looks painted before spending any more cash!

Mac was a very good modeller too

A long term IPMS man he often figured in the competition stakes in branch and national classes, not just on aircraft either

Nice bloke and often used to joke about his bulk, saying he needed to fly bigger kites than the Hurri because of his girth

It was a privilege to know him and others of his era

edit as usual - crappy spelling -- privilege FGS

Bit of an update.

Why oh why did I think of lighting up the cockpit..........

Anyway, cockpit decals printed (excuse the flash);

As you can see, I've given myself some room for screw ups! There are combined ones there as well as components (seperate silver rings, seperate white backing, plain black top decals). The paper sheet contains the masks for cutting out the plastic panels.

Speaking of which, here's a plastic panel that has been drilled to match up with the dial locatons;

Bit fiddly, but not too bad.

To that we add some of this;

to create a spiders web;

and

The fibres have been super glued into the plastic carrier and once that is dry I can then trim and polish the ends. If all goes to plan (which I really suspect it won't) I can then put a thin clear plastic sheet over the top and then add the decals (of course, it'll need cutting and bending as well). What I suspect may happen is that the light points will be too small, and will require a lens to disperse the light better. If that is the case then I'll create another panel with the same holes, glue the two panels togetehr and fill the new holes with clear resin. That might work.

If that doesn't work, it'll be a clear plastic panel with a couple of LEDs behind it.

I should think so (if I don't get frustrated with the impending failure!)

Well, both ends polished and yes, there is light on the panel. Hmm, maybe singlemode wasn't such a good idea, bit too fine, which means I'll need a serious light source to get the effect I want. So, I have this one as a backup and some thicker fibre to try next (not really data fibre though).

Slightly dissapointing, but not totally unexpected, so I consoled myself by filling and sanding the casting dent on the fuselage side.

Did they actually have illuminated instruments? I've got a couple, out of a Seafire, a Barracuda and and a Lancaster, and they just have great big dollops of luminous paint.

Not sure to be honest and to be fair, prabably not, just thought it would be a bit different. Current light levels are definitely in the luminous paint range though!
