I've been offered a 2009 C5 with the 2.2 HDi 173bhp engine and manual box. It's in perfect spec, fantastic condition and is available to me below market value. Just what I want.

I am tempted, but for one reason: the performance.

I expected good things from a 170 hp/270lbft diesel. I drive a lot of four cylinder diesels and I thought I knew what to expect. But this just feels a little... slow. I've driven it for 2 days and it got no better.

Can this be right? It should pull well shouldn't it?

I wonder if the car has a problem? The turbo spools at 2000rpm and it goes to the redline okay. It just never really lights up and goes like most diesels do. Where's the giant rubber band feeling? Where's the overtaking torque? Not here. If you said I was driving the 1.6 HDi I would believe you.

Worst is the throttle response. Come off and then back onto the throttle, and there's a long, long pause before boost comes back. Changing gear is to invite a 2 second break in acceleration - which makes overtaking a complete non-option.

Do you think there's a problem, or is this engine just terrible compared to the German competition? There are no error codes showing even after 300 miles use. It starts and runs okay. Economy is ok at 35MPG average over the past 6,000 miles. It has tons of history and servicing - but has done over 120,000 miles.

Experiences? Options? Please?
