I post this with trepidation...

I got my 197 in December on 44k miles from an Evans Halshaw dealer. It had history with it but no invoices etc & no sign of a new gearbox or cambelt.
Got the belts etc done last weekend which cost me £540 all in which I was quite happy with but since then I've had a crunch twice when trying to engage 2nd gear. It's only happened twice and the car drives completely normally otherwise but I'm absolutely terrified that the gearbox may be on the way out given their reputation.

Does anyone have any advice of what I should be doing? Is it a waiting game or can I stop it from fking up by changing the gearbox oil or something?

Cheers all smile

Changing the oil is an easy job and could do be the ticket. There is a good thread in the "how to" on 197.net

Crunching in 2nd is unusual. Mine has issues with downchanging into 3rd.

It's usually 4th isn't it? I've noticed mine isn't the easiest into 2nd if I'm a bit rough with the box, I'm not too bothered it's probably my st driving lol.

Would say give the gearbox oil a change an see how it is as it's pretty simple. 4th is usually the main one to go as mine has.

I noticed a thread on Clio197.net the other week where a chap had his clutch bled and it helped the shift a lot apparently.

My 200 has only done 21k but as it'll be 5 yrs at the end of the summer I am booking it in this week for new fluid and a bleed. I would suggest a 197 would undoubtedly benefit from both too.

It's certainly going better now then when I bought it with a few extra miles on under it. I picked it up I think about August last year on just under 13k, so I'm doing normal mileage in it now. But the previous owner who owned it from new must have averaged about 3k a year!

Mines just fked up mad

2010 clio rs200 ff cup was a Renault demo for over a year so just pottering about and one owner since and brought it on 27k

Now at 30k and the gearbox has st its self. refuses to go in forth without crunching and has no feel.
changed oil twice and has made no difference.
Got on to renault customer service it has now been at a garage since tuesday and still there frown

They have said they will give me 30% which comes back as over £2000 pounds for a replacement box!! mad

When they finally ring me, i shall be having a very strong word which i have reserved until now and be stating unless we get nearer a 90% input which i have seen commonly offered on this matter i shall be taking it else where and recommending no one to buy a renualt.

And after the amount of time i have spent on hold listening to they're cars for life, and excellent customer service st i think i am in all right to push and see where exactly my car fits into that promoted idea.

Either way i am pissed of big time. had the car a maximum of 3 months. I'm only 19 worked my ahole off to save up enough for the car i've always wanted in the right spec/colour etc and insurance to not be able to drive it... and definitely won't be able to afford there proposed price for the box and work.

Such a shame because the car is absolutely fantastic and brings a huge smile to my face every time i look at it, let alone drive it.

Mine was replaced by Renault at 34k miles in July 2012 (car is now on 46k), total bill was just over £1100 however Renault contributed to 25% of the bill.

Try voicing you're displeasure over at the renaultsport forum itself, usually gets attention given their Coms Director JT is on there a bit. £0% is a pretty poor contribution for a 4 year old car
