Hi folks, I've got a sick Berlingo on the drive. The 1.6HDI engine is a horrible pile of poo and currently features a knackered turbo, so I was thinking the best way forward would be to fit a bigger and better engine to it. What choices to I have? As far as I understand it the 1.9TD engine from a Peugeot 306 will fit straight in, but I wouldn't be human if I didn't think about fititng a larger engine. I'm not a fabricator and barely know one end of a welding torch from another so anything which requires making engine mounts or cutting the engine bay about is out.Will a GTi6 engine drop in? Will it fit on the existing gearbox? Is there anything else I should know? I know I could simply bolt a new turbo on (and change the oil and filters and pipework six times, clean the sump and all the rest of it) but that feels like much less fun than putting a larger engine in. All advice gratefully received!

I'm sure Ive seen a build thread or something on a kangoo van with the petrol turbo out of a volvo in it, from what i can remember it is a physical (in terms of mechanical intefaces) a straight swap.

yes the 1.6hdi is a terrible engine,fitted to loads of fords/fiats now as well,pity the owners of these in the future!
anyway maybe the RHR 2.0diesel out of the 407,140bhp but easily maps 180bhp.
or the old 3.0v6 out of a 406 coupe.

Theres nothing wrong with the 1.6 hdi engine its down too poor cheap servicing using wrong and low quaity oil. We have these engines with in excess of 200000 miles We have never fitted a turbo too a regular customers car
We use Castrol lubricants

there's nothing good about the 1.6hdi,turbo's fail ,wrong grade oil will kill them,even with the correct oil,they carbon up in the cam box,then carbon gets sucked in causing fin damage,and quite common to find a conrod through the side of the block.egr clog up easily,never come across such a problematic modern day engine.

"Even after all the above has been carried out we cannot guarantee all carbon/oil sludge will be removed and you could still suffer a premature turbo failure. In the event of premature failure it is common for the impeller/nose nut to "come off", this is a consequence of a lubrication/turbine shaft failure & NOT a cause of turbo failure.

We feel that due to the possibility of further turbo failures on this engine it is only right to inform you before you purchase a replacement turbo. Currently we are experiencing a 65% failure rate of units we supply for this engine. Please feel free to speak to our engineers or sales team if you would like to discuss this issue further.

Any turbo returned under warranty will be subject to our standard terms and conditions.
We would also like to assure you that this is the only engine in our range we have experienced these failure rates with. We as a company will always inform you of any ongoing issues to allow you to make the right judgement call for what you deem correct for your business."

its down too crap oil mate simple ! We never fit a turbo too our customers cars that must tell you something ????
Peugeot engineers division could'nt they work it out too lolol!

The later engines with the cam belts that run in oil should be interesting only Total make the oil for that unit
Peugeot are now testing oils on warranty claims! should be a few court cases coming up
