Hi Guys,

As a lot of you will know the Cambelt/Dephaser on RenaultSport Clios are the biggest bill they can come with.

I am looking to put a bit of cash away and I've been offered a Clio 172 + £500 for my Ep3. In all normal circumstances it looks spot on and I would go ahead, similar sort of car and £500 in the bank with slightly better Mpg as an added bonus, however...

....the car is on 86k with no receipt for cambelt ever being done. All I have is the owners word that the person he bought it from had it done at the correct interval.

My question is,
Should I go ahead based on goodwill knowing I could have a big bill around the corner?
If I were to go ahead would a Renault specialist be able to see how good condition the belt is in, therefore being able to get it done before it takes the engine with it?
Or should I refuse the deal without the receipt?

Thanks,
Billy.

It's never really worth risking it to be honest.

It will cost you £500 or so to get the cambelt and aux belt sorted (+£200 for the dephaser too) if you go to one of the specialists on the ClioSport forums.

Thus the real question is, do you want what is essentially a straight swap?

Small point, but aux belt, cambelt and dephaser can be done for more like £500-£550 at a specialist

Bought my 172 Cup with a promise that the belts had been done but no receipt. Didn't believe a word of it & had them changed @ 70k earlier this year after deciding it was a risk not worth taking on a basically sound car.

Doesn't sound like a great deal for you to be honest.
