As an ownership prospect, what are the pros and cons of both, in terms of expense, enjoyment usability and comfort?

Megane is going to be more usable and comfortable than the clio it will also be more expensive to run.

Clio - Cheap and fun
Megane - usable, comfortable and 90% fun

Depends what your expectations are I guess.

As said above the 1*2 will be cheaper to run & probably more fun, the 225 will be quicker, more refined & comfortable.

I have had my 172 Cup for almost 5 years, I love it to bits but I couldn't have it as my only car nono

I've have had both, and am now back in a 172.
As others have said- the Clio is much cheaper to run(both fuel economy and consumables).

The Clio is more fun, but it's easier to drive quickly in the Megane- it feels much more planted and you don't quite realise the speed you're carrying at times.

The Megane is a much more practical car and could be your only car if you have a family, whereas the Clio is much too small.
The ride quality was better in a 182 with cup suspension than the Megane with cup suspension.
Brakes are much better in the Megane as standard.

There were many versions of the Clio 1*2, which one are you looking at ?
1.2 8valve, 1.2 16valve or probably the later 1.2 Tce turbo ?

So a bit more detail, I'd be looking at a phase 2 172 or a 182 or a boggo 225.

Would be looking for one with cruise control and aircon.

Currently driving a 1.2 clio (not a big jump, had an mx5 too) so size isn't a problem. Would like the comfort of a 6th gear but not that big a problem if its got lower running costs.

I've had 7 1*2's,now in an r26. The clios are cheaper to run, 36mpg average v 31mpg for the megane. Out of the box the clio is more fun to drive. The megane is quicker (but not by a massive amount), had the nicer driving position and interior. Much more space too.

Couldn't go back to a 1*2 as my only car now. Conversely, if I was looking for something fun to run alongside a sensible daily, I'd take the clio over the megane.

I've had mine remapped by rstuning. It's now a lot faster than the clio. Something to consider if you're planning modifications.

Having sold Renaults for many years, including 172's, 182's and 225's I personally wouldn't touch a used 225, they just age very badly, particularly early ones, they feel old and baggy much more so than a182 of a similar vintage, also they are blisteringly fast in a straight line but no where near as fun as a 182, 225's also cost a load more to fix and run and aren't as reliable as a 182.

Having seen the faff you have to go through just to change a headlight bulb on one of these age Meganes, I wouldn't even consider one.

I've owned both a 182 and a R26, both very different cars. If I were to go back I'd go for the 182 pocket rocket, brilliant little car, cam shift gives you a real kick up the backside.

The 'official' way is a bumper off job. The 'unofficial' way, if you have a mechanic with small hands, is in through the wheel arches

No, the official way is through the wheel arch, which is why the hatches are in the wheel arch liners.

Ha ha. a Clio 1.2 v a Megane 225 would have a somewhat predictable outcome.

I've got a 182 FF that I use as a daily commute hack doing around 60 miles a day, does the job well and it's been pretty reliable over the time I've had it (bought at 50k 2yrs ago now on 85k) I've also driven it down to the south of France a couple of times. It's kinda loud on the motorway though, but it's all relative as compared to my 205 it's refined, compared to my MX5 it's quiet and compared to my OH MK2 Focus it's a bloody washing machine, albeit a fast one.

Only problems I've had with it are a couple of broken springs and the steering wheel falling apart, so I got a re-trim off a guy on ClioSport. 182 are pretty cheap now, but there are a lot of knackered ones around. Big thing to check is the cambelt change as it's around £600 from a specialist. I have heard that there is a big difference in build quality (bit crap...) with the 225 Megane as it was built in the main Renault factory rather than by Renaultsport in Dieppe so the 182 and 230 are much better. Not sure if this is all true?

My car history

Megane 225
Clio 182 Trophy
Clio 200 w/cup
Clio 172 phase 1
Clio V6
Mini GP
Clio 182 Trophy

My cars are only bought for fun, can you see the common theme I keep going back to?

1*2s are just so much fun, cheap to run, don't break down in my experience (I look after my cars though, probably helps).

The only car from the list I would never consider going back to was the 225, the power was ok, but it's not 'fun' for my liking. Only lasted about 8 months I think
