My parents had a new C3 1.4 petrol from new for 5 years and 80k miles. I think the only thing that went wrong was a snapped coil spring.

I wouldn't rule out buying a Citroen for reliability reasons but would probably rule most of them out for other reasons.

im too scared to comment and say my 2009 C5 has only cost me for bulbs in the time ive had it!! doh ive tempted fate and the wheels are gonna fall off tomorrow.

in fairness its got shed loads of electrics, 2 turbos, DMF and DPFs so im braced for something to go wrong at some point but so far so good. Its had a lot less spent on it than a same age passat i ran (8k in a year warranty work), a honda Accord also the same age(3k in a year warranty work) and a BMW 5 series of a couple of years older.

if you get a good one you shopuld be alright but a bad one wont be great, possibly. same for every newish car now.

We bought a 1 year old DS4 last year from Motorpoint as our family car. It's been absolutely faultless in that time after 12,000 miles. It feels really solid and well built to me. And we love the exterior and the brilliant interior feels nice and characterful.

I really don't understand why people generalise so much about French cars by suggesting they're all rubbish. I also own a Megane (RS250) and that too has been absolutely brilliant for 3 years.

I compare this to our previous experience with a VW Golf which we bought 2 years old. We had constant faults and the bills were expensive. And yet the common perception is that VW's are reliable. There's clearly some luck in car-buying - you might get a good one or a duffer.

I've had our Citroën C4 Grand Picasso for 4 years now. The only problems I've had with it is that one day the duel climate control got stuck on cold, on the drivers side but rectified itself when I restarted the car, and the front nearside coil went.

Been a great car, I even thought it was as well built as the new VW Sharan I just had for 2 months, whilst the Citroën was being repaired after an accident.

Thanks for all the replies. A mixture of good and bad experiences. Looks like they aren't perfect but no worse than many other manufacturers.

I think we have a winner for most epic lurking!

Citroens are no worse than any other mainstream brand. It's all about perception. A Citroen goes wrong and you're thinking 'bloody French - can't build a car. Everything French is st.'

VW goes wrong and you think 'that's odd they're normally very reliable. Must be a one off problem.'

A bit like JD surveys a few years back with Skoda topping the results. A cheap car must perform poorly and when it doesn't it exceeds your low expectations. You expect Merc to be bulletproof and when it fails you are bitterly disappointed as it has failed to live up to expectations.

The other half has had a C2 from new and it us now on 112k and has so far needed an alternator, 2 coil springs, a glow plug and a few bulbs outside of consumables. Happy with that for reliability.

I drive an '07 C2 VTS (Petrol). I have done over 26000 miles in around 19 months. Apart from a snapped front spring, coil pack and new drop links it has been issue free.....

had a Peugeot Partner (rebadged citroen berlingo) put 100k on it in a year without fault. that was the 1.6 hdi. only thing I was warned about by Ecosse was to use the right oil in it at all times as the hdi's are sensitive to the right grade. other than that it had the backside kicked out of it until it met with a large lorry and a central reservation frown even then stood up bloody well and i walked away with only airbag burns to show for a high speed smash

in fact i'm actually looking at the face lift Berlingo/Partner thats just coming out to replace our current Mondeo

Correct, that's why the words "apart from" were used.

Partner has a 1.6 HDI-E DS3 Style+.

Gets treated awfully but hasn't had a issue in 3 and a bit years apart from one of the hangers off the exhaust backbox needing welding back on. Really comfy car and IMO looks the part compared to a similar fiesta or focus.

Seems to be a trend now with newer cars, exhausts made of paper, her old Aygo had the same after about 12k.

Id get one again, the 1.6 PSA diesel lump is very frugal and pulls well when driven right, just don't skimp on the oil changes.

The first generation C5 got a glowing report by car mechanics magazine as a used buy a few months back, as regards reliability, rustproofing, part prices etc.

The magazine tend towards the conservative, and I have found them to be accurate with faults on my vehicles, it is a vote of confidence in the model.

My DS3 is 5 years old. The only problem I've had is the common exhaust bracket failure - the whole system was replaced under warranty.

After three Alfas it's like a breath of fresh air!

My other half has run a C3 for a year which she paid £900 for. Zero issues and has just sold it on for a similar amount.
