Good job on saving the 172. I remember your other post about it.

How do the 2 compare?

Got my belts due in August.... grumpy
Well stating the obvious but the 197 is the more mature car. The 172 i have has GAZ coilovers which ruin it as an everyday car, so the 197 trumps it as something you'd hop into for a long run. The feedback in the steering is much better in the 172. The 172 feels fractionally faster i guess because its lighter. What surprises me most about the 172 is how well put together it feels - granted there are some lose bits of trim, but mechanically it all feels so "tight" - i guess the suspension and strut braces help with that but i think its a credit to the car that it has stuck 97,000 miles of hard driving and feels so good.

Offsetting that, the 197 feels the fresher, younger car. You can tell its a full generation of car younger than the 172. I love the styling of the 197 too - the big arches and wider track are very obvious compared to the subtlety of the 172. Conversely the 172 feels like it has more personality.

Each to their own. Both fantastic cars!

I got "caught" a bit with the 197 and needing a belt. I got it at a really good price, but i kind of blinded myself to the belt needing done @ 72K miles OR 6 years. My car has just 52K miles but its 8 years old and had no belt change. So i had a bit of a panic attack and got all the work done. So its turned a bargain into an average priced car. But i guess the seller knew that. My fault for not doing my due diligence fully

Still love it though!

Fantastic car and great photos.
I have had 2 of these over the years and thoroughly enjoyed them both especially the last one with the Mi16 engine.
Trying to recapture some of that excitement with my current 208 GTi.

My last 205 won a competition with Peugeot UK and I went up the hill at Goodwood FoS in a 208 GTI. To be honest it was more fun driving down to Goodwood and back in my 205!!

Modern cars are just too heavy and detached for me.

Bought this little beauty for the Mrs. Traded for a Mini convertible. This is a much better car.

Not quite as rapid as a 1.9GTI - here we have a 1.8 diesel Zest. All 59 bhp of it! To be fair it's a good little shopping trolley and runabout, and in it's 24 years it hasn't yet required any welding. The lacquer on the bonnet and front half of the roof has failed though, so will probably get that fixed at some stage.

It's sooo much easier to live with than the Clio apart from reversing it into the garage as you just can't see the arse at all! Not as much fun to hammer down a B road but maybe that just takes getting used to and the rest of the time it's a much nicer place to be and a bit more grown up. Kinda wanted a 5 door as three doors does get annoying but they seem really rare in decent condition. Does yours have the cup pack?

Managed to get a less rubbish picture of mine too
