Recently bought a Peugeot 206 Gti 180, and noticed the back box is in bad shape. It's pretty rusty and unsightly and looks pathetic. Also, it's far too quiet and gives off a wheezy sound.

Looking about it would seem all aftermarket replacements are very expensive new, and very scarce as second hand. As I'd rather not spend a fortune on a box for what was a pretty cheap car, I was wondering if there is a way around this. My thoughts were possibly swapping the exhaust from the cat back, for one from a Gti 140, as these are much more readily available. I have no idea what's compatible, and my usual advice circles are pretty slow to respond on the matter.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Pebbles smile

Hi buddy,
Back in the day I bought a 180 brand new and changed the full system to stainless with a one off custom back box made and after a rolling road session the car produced poor results and the bloke thought it was all down to the rear box not being standard..

Thanks for the reply bud. Did you ever have it on a rolling road before the exhaust?

I think the poor performance was likely just the standard power figure, apparently they rarely made above 175bhp max, usually around 165ish.

I think an exhaust would up this a bit, but I'm not hoping for massive gains.

One of the best systems you can go for is the Janspeed system, I have this but the 138 version on my 138.

You can't straight fit the 138 systems on to the 180 as the bore size is different by about half an inch if I remember right, it may be quarter of an inch. But either way there not a straight swap.

The standard 180 back box's are well known for rusting away.

If you have any other questions you want answering, feel free to PM me, I've had my fair share of these. Had a handful of 138's and a 180 as well as a couple of HDi's and my very first car my 1.4. Also got a GTi-6 at the moment as well and im constantly playing under the bonnet with one of them.

with my 180 hidden in the garage.

Slightly O/T, my lad is looking for his first car at the moment and I'm happy that he wants a 206 1.4 smile

They seem absolute bargains and I think the shape is much nicer than the Corsa/Fiesta etc.

Is there anything I should know? From what I have seen of them, they are similar to the old 306 that I have previously owned?

I like them smile

Shameless plug, but im trying to sell a 206 2L HDi Eco (£30 a year tax) that needs a bit of work to get it back on the road, nothing major if your interested at all.

But not much to look out for on them, just make sure it's been looked after, cambelt depending upon age/millage, and check the back axle for any play that's a common failing point on them. Also the strap holding the fuel tanks are common to rust away and need replacing, but there only 2 bolts & about £16 from Peugeot. They do like to eat bottom arms though so check those for play as well. Standard exhausts gets rotten quite easily, in the 2 and a bit years I had mine, I think my whole system got replaced about 3 times in bits. Also the 1.4's are common for gearbox's failing, usually drops the diff bearing, starts off as a whine/rumble whilst off the power but slowly gets worse.

If you need any more info feel free to PM me, and ill try my best to answer any questions.

Nope, bore size is different by half an inch.
